[SOLVED] Help needed to recover a router after sysupgrade QHora-301W

I've posted my specific issue here described for the first time.
After sysupgrade I can not connect anymore to the router.
Currently I've connected to the serial port of the router and posted the details here.
I need help to understand what's going on and I hope to recover from this issue.
Thanks in advance.

run firstboot, as a start, to reset any (mis)configuration you might have done.

You version says r0-2731da5.

It appears you are using firmware that is not from the official OpenWrt project.

When using forks/offshoots/vendor-specific builds that are "based on OpenWrt", there may be many differences compared to the official versions (hosted by OpenWrt.org). Some of these customizations may fundamentally change the way that OpenWrt works. You might need help from people with specific/specialized knowledge about the firmware you are using, so it is possible that advice you get here may not be useful.

You may find that the best options are:

  1. Install an official version of OpenWrt, if your device is supported (see https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org).
  2. Ask for help from the maintainer(s) or user community of the specific firmware that you are using.
  3. Provide the source code for the firmware so that users on this forum can understand how your firmware works (OpenWrt forum users are volunteers, so somebody might look at the code if they have time and are interested in your issue).

If you believe that this specific issue is common to generic/official OpenWrt and/or the maintainers of your build have indicated as such, please feel free to clarify.

since you got serial, just redo the install from https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=bd17683261e1dde1fdd4223745852de1ce8cfc89 ?

Currently I write this message form a recovered router.
Thanks for the help.
There is still one glitch though. The router doesn't keep settings after a reboot.

Before going into the details and starting debugging, make sure to sysupgrade -n /tmp/<your sysupgrade image> again, chances are good that it will fix your issues.

I've just done this but this time it didn't help. Previously this helped me.

Then check if the overlay gets mounted (on flash), if there's enough free space and what dmesg/ logread have to say about the overlay.

root@OpenWrt:~# dmesg/ logread
-ash: dmesg/: not found

Those are two different/ individual commands.

Sorry

You may just be a bit too impatient, I'd suggest to sysupgrade -n … again, letting it reboot and then allowing it to settle (format & mount the overlay) a bit (let's say 5 minutes), before trying to access (or in particular reboot-) the router.

No success for now
I get this

on Jun 12 14:06:19 2023 daemon.err mount_root: failed - mount -t jffs2 /dev/loop0 /rom/overlay: Invalid argument
Mon Jun 12 14:06:19 2023 kern.err kernel: [ 15.687907] MTD: Attempt to mount non-MTD device "/dev/loop0"

Did you follow this section exactly ?

• make sure that current_entry is set to "0":
              "fw_printenv -n current_entry" should be print "0". If not,
       do "fw_setenv current_entry 0"
            • copy openwrt-ipq807x-generic-qnap_301w-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
to the device to /tmp folder
            • sysupgrade -n /tmp/openwrt-ipq807x-generic-qnap_301w-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
this flashes openwrt to the first kernel and rootfs partition (mmcblk0p1 / mmcblk0p4)
            • reboot

I've first flashed OpenWrt following the procedure that allows to do it without opening the router. And yes I did everything exactly and all was OK and I ran the robimarko's build with settings saved. But later I decided to try AgustinLorenzo's NSS build in order to compare them. I simply did sysupgrade without keeping the settings but after that the router became inaccessible.

The QNAP uses emmc flash as storage, therefore the overlay is stored on a loop device. That loop device is ext4 formated.
So the error message is quite clear, an ext4 formated loop device cannot be mounted with jiffs.

I assume the reason is the used .full_config of your unsupported build:

The required kmod-fs-ext4 is only build as a module, but there is no autoload for that module defined.

CONFIG_PACKAGE_kmod-fs-ext4=m

That means, the kernel module isn't even loaded at boot and consequently OpenWrt is trying to mount a jiffs partition as overlay.

It' not even required to add that entry to the .full_config as kmod-fs-ext4 is already defined as a DEFAULT_PACKAGE.

Can I do anything to correct this.
Maybe to compile a version form that repo without the option?

CONFIG_PACKAGE_kmod-fs-ext4=m

I just want to compile my own customized NSS build only for QHora 301W as I do for R7800.
But before I am able to set up the build environment and eventually have a successful compile I want to try already compiled build by more experienced users.

I wouldn't be so quick to conclude that. I've seen the commit count reset to 0 myself on vanilla OpenWrt, when messing with branches and whatnot. I found that, to match the official commit count in my downstream branch stable, I needed to patch scripts/getver.sh, otherwise it would get very creative about the commit count.

Before doing any of the follwing, I had to connect to the serial port of the router first and issue firstboot command in order to be able to connect to the router using the LAN ports.

Then after several retries of sysupgrade -n /tmp/openwrt-ipq807x-generic-qnap_301w-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin nothing changed. Settings cannot be saved. Running @AgustinLorenzo latest NSS QHora-301W build. It's obviously somehow incompatible.

The second method I tried was to flash back the @robimarko image. This was the first OpenWrt image that was installed on the router following @MusikJunk guide. It was working fine.
I've tried to flash it back without keeping settings using force option to do it. No success - after the reboot the router was still running AgustinLorenzo latest NSS QHora-301W build without possibility to save the settings.
Then I've tried the same using sysupgrade -n /tmp/openwrt-ipq807x-generic-qnap_301w-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin using robimarko sysyupgrade.bin. Once again No success - after the reboot the router was still running AgustinLorenzo latest NSS QHora-301W build without possibility to save the settings.

Thanks a lot @frollic for your two really helpful suggestions. I've taken slightly different approach without using the UART.
Thinking of what I can do next, I've first set the boot partition to 1 and rebooted.

fw_setenv current_entry 1
reboot

The router rebooted to the original QNAP firmware.
It was obviously started from partition 1 (As I have OpenWrt NSS build on partition 0).
At this time I had to switch the LAN cables from LAN1 and 10G-1 ports (QNAP firmware uses LAN1 as WAN by default but OpenWrt uses 10G-1 as WAN) from/to my PC/ISP ONU and vice versa. This was needed in order to access the router (QNAP firmware).

After that I've simply repeated certain steps from MusikJunk's guide.

Then I was back to OpenWrt running robimarko's build but still unable to save settings after a reboot.
I've copied openwrt-ipq807x-generic-qnap_301w-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin to /tmp.
I've done sysupgrade -n /tmp/openwrt-ipq807x-generic-qnap_301w-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
and finally this time I can save the settings, install packages, save config. They survive a reboot.

It wasn't necessary to install the firmware for 10G phys as I've already done so on my first flash.

Any comments about this obvious incompatibility between the different sysupgrade images?

This should be a warning to the users that may possibly want to do the same and switch between NSS and Non-NSS builds.

Why are you using robimarko's image instead of the snapshots ? Maybe that is the culprit ?
