Connecting OpenWrt router as client?

Hello,

as I am a new user to OpenWrt am I trying to explain as best as possible what I am trying to achieve.

I do have a Fritzbox 6591 running in Bridge mode. Behind this I am using a GL-MT6000 running the stock firmware. Sadly the Fritzbox doesn't offer a way to acces the Web Gui over the Bridge port. So I currently have to options to acces the Web Gui.

  1. I am using the Fritzbox VPN and connect via VPN. This does only work in case the Fritzbox is online. In case of problems it will not work.
  2. I am connection my Laptop via Cable/WiFi to the Fritzbox. This is kinda annoying as I would prefer to access it through my OpenWrt router.

What might be the best way to connect the Fritzbox to the OpenWrt router so I can access the Web Gui of the Fritzbox? Just installing a ethernet probably won't work as they both have different subnets.

Thanks in advance.

How is OpenWRT involved?

But you're not running Openwrt... ?

It is running a slightly modified version of OpenWrt.

Then ask the people who "slightly modified" it, or install proper Openwrt.

It appears you are using firmware that is not from the official OpenWrt project.

When using forks/offshoots/vendor-specific builds that are "based on OpenWrt", there may be many differences compared to the official versions (hosted by OpenWrt.org). Some of these customizations may fundamentally change the way that OpenWrt works. You might need help from people with specific/specialized knowledge about the firmware you are using, so it is possible that advice you get here may not be useful.

You may find that the best options are:

  1. Install an official version of OpenWrt, if your device is supported (see https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org).
  2. Ask for help from the maintainer(s) or user community of the specific firmware that you are using.
  3. Provide the source code for the firmware so that users on this forum can understand how your firmware works (OpenWrt forum users are volunteers, so somebody might look at the code if they have time and are interested in your issue).

If you believe that this specific issue is common to generic/official OpenWrt and/or the maintainers of your build have indicated as such, please feel free to clarify.

Thanks for your answer.

My problem is not specific for this version. I had OpenWrt running before I reverted back to the stock firmware as I prefer their Gui over LuCi.

The problem in this case if basically the Fritzbox. The Bridgemode on these boxes don't work like on most routers. It will offer a Bridge mode on one port and work as a normal router on the others. Thats why it doesn't provide access to the Web Gui over the Bridge Port and only through the other ports.

So I am trying to figure out what might be the best solution to access the Web Gui. Maybe I am wrong but I think just connecting the LAN4 port of the Fritzbox with the LAN 4 port of the MT6000 wouldn't work and just cause problems.

Edit: Maybe you could breakdown my problem with the term: How to connect a OpenWrt router to another router to access the other subnet?

Problem can probably be solved, but as long as you run the gl.inet firmware we won't know if whatever we tell you will fix or break something, the firmwares do differ, after all...

Start by reinstalling Openwrt, or seek assistance elsewhere (the Gl-iNet forum, perhaps ?).

Alright, im just reinstalling the original Openwrt.

Do you have any post or maybe just a term where to start researching? I don't mind reading but to be honest I am not sure where to start at. There are many posts where people just add another interface for the modem but this won't work as my Web Gui of the modem is not accessible via the WAN port.

Thank you very much for your effort but after inspecting those threads they all have a modem which can atleast theoretically be reached through the WAN port. Thats not the case in my setup. I will need to access the Web Gui through a different LAN port of the Fritzbox.

EDIT: I tried modifying this solution to my need by replacing the WAN interface with LAN5 and corresponding Firewall zone but had not luck.

Can you better explain what this means?

So the device running a modified version isn't even involved here?

Your post does not appear to be related to an officially released OpenWrt version, package or supported operation.

It is unlikely that you will receive useful input here.

Please seek advise from the relevant maintainer.
