Wireless Bridge

Hello,

I've been trying to implement wireless bridge functionality for the last few days, but it doesn't seem to be possible on OpenWrt 23.05.

My requirement is to use the auxiliary router as a wireless network card or wireless switch, connect the device through wired means, and receive DHCP from the upstream.

Since my upstream wireless AP is not running OpenWrt, I cannot use the Wireless Distribution System (WDS). And I don't need to extend my wireless network, I just want a good "wireless switch".

relayd seems to be a solution, but first it must manually configure the IP address.

From what I've seen, OpenWrt 23.05 doesn't work as a fully functional, automated "wireless switch".

That's why I want wireless bridge functionality.

this was only possible on old Broadcom-based devices (as this confused me when i first started using OpenWrt). It sounds like you want relay mode.

What make/model device is this?

There's extended discussions on why this is a hardware-based standard, not something that can be implemented via software. Feel free to search.

From what I've read, that is not supported: The STA end of a regular (not WDS) AP-STA link cannot be placed in a bridge. This is because the 802.11 standard does not transmit the necessary MAC address information for layer 2 switching to work. A cable would be best indeed, but alas, I can't get one to the room with the media player.

(You coulda asked why it wasn't possible - I wondered why it seemed as if you kept ignoring the wireless bridge posting and kept trying anyway.)

This isn't accurate, I provided an example config in the thread. It does not contain that. In fact it has no IP, as the protocol is set to "none".
