Modem doesnot get detected (ZBT WE826 16m)

Hello Everyone,
ZBT WE826 16m has inbuilt modem and a simcard slot.. I have built an image with modemmanager and luci-proto-modemmanager for the same but the modem does not get detected.. I tried using the mmcli command it shows nothing ... Please help

First confirm that you do have a modem card (as the base WE826 ships with an empty slot -- modem is sold separately) and what model it is. You'll need the kernel driver for the modem, which depends on what protocol type the modem uses. Most late model modems are either rndis or qmi.

rndis is very simple-- install kmod-usb-net-rndis and a new Ethernet like interface should be created. Attach it to the wan network.

qmi starts with kmod-usb-net-qmi-wwan but you should also install luci-proto-qmi to configure it.

Depending upon the order, ZBT or one of their OEMs also ships the WE-826 incl. modem, which usually is region-specific, i.e. for USA or Europe. Quite often, it is a Quectel EC25, but sometimes also might be a SIMCOM, to save $5.
However, the Quectel EC25 definitely is the preferred modem, in case you do not need highest speed.

mine is definitely with the modem as I did connect it to the internet with the sim card and AT commands with the default openwrt it came with which was LEDE so I built one myself with modemmanager etc and latest 19.07 but now it doesnot connect ... Its WE826 T2 ..

regarding the kernel driver for the modem could you tell me how do I know the type of modem.. This is the first time I am dealing with modem and openwrt so completely clueless here.

To be absolutely shure, just open the box. As you used it already, region matches, at least.

If you run dmesg after a reboot you should see some messages there indicating that the modem is ready for use. If you do not, then that means either your firmware is missing a required kernel module, or perhaps the modem is not powered on. Sometimes a modem is powered up via a GPIO pin, and you will have to toggle that GPIO. If it is a Quectel EC25 modem in NDIS mode, then you probably cannot use ModemManager to control the modem, you will need to use something like comgt, so try luci-proto-ncm.

The modem seems not initialised as I don't see such a message in the dmesg logs.. I am building another firmware with the AT commands lets see if I can get the modem detected with them.. Moreover the modem used is

Folksy 3RN13

Please share me information about it if you have any... regarding which kernel module would be required to get it detected automatically etc

Do you see a USB bus in the kernel logs? You may be missing USB, which would preclude anything attached to the USB bus from being detected. Try adding kmod-usb kmod-usb2 kmod-usb2-pci and kmod-usb3, then add kmod-usb-serial-qualcomm, as this looks like it has a Qualcomm chip based on what I found online.

How about you post your dmesg output after a full boot to Pastebin then link it here.

Replace modem. See https://ltehacks.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1393

Start from posting the result of cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices
That way we can probably make it properly detected by OpenWrt, however I read about 'No SIM' issue that has nothing to do with OpenWrt.
Getting a better modem should be the right choice.

My modem in a WG 3526 is also not detected, also with the above mentioned
kmod-usb-blablabla modules. Expect in the original chinese firmware (19.01.11),
but it never transferred any data thru 4/3/2G network. Weird!!

I think its some fault in the modem firmware as i tried a Asus 4G-AC68U which
uses, from my view, a good made firmware.

But it also not transferred any data. It seems this asian devices do
not work in specific regions.

I have got the chinese firmware which I extracted before I flashed the device with the latest openwrt.. I am thinking now of comparing the firmwares as with the chinese firmware I could make the modem work with the AT commands but there was some weird problem with dnsmasq and I was unable to install dnsmasq-full because it was running lede and the feeds links were all useless ones.. So I though of the upgrade... but anyways if anyone has any Idea please share.. Thanks

Hello,

I am suffering the same issue with the Folksy modem.
Unfortunately I did not keep the original Firmware

Is there a way to get it ? I would like to work on finding the module on it

Thanks

You don't need original firmware to find the modem.

Thanks !

I did not get that far ... I did not insert the SIM as I believed that the card was not recognised

Here is the output of the cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices

It seems to me that it is a "Alcatel Onetouch L850"

isn't it ?

Your modem is recognized and cdc_ether driver is bound to some interface. Just find the ethX interface name and configure it. See TP-Link Archer C7 v5 with TELSEC TS-1K6 USB 4G Modem

Thanks,

Indeed, I missed the relevant part on the output from "dmesg"

Hi @AndrewZ the dmesg output doesnot have cdc_ether in mycase I am unable to detect the modem

usb 1-1.3: new high-speed USB device number 3 using ehci-platform
Here a device (your modem?) is detected and registered on the USB bus, but no driver claims it.

That looks like the first boot of a new install, did you install the cdc driver yet?

Start from posting the result of cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices
