Is anyone by chance working on this? I have been using these for about a year now for mesh networking with great success, but the last batch i ordered all have this new boyamicro chip. I have no idea how to write this patch, but I am reading up on it. I have both the old working units plus several of the new ones, so I am going to try to figure it out. If anyone wants to assist in any capacity that would be great.

While I understand where your coming from, whether its worth it is quite opinionated. I do not need all the bells and whistles that are included in the stock openwrt. I simply need wifi, mesh capabilities, and external use. These wav link units have fit the bill well for the last couple years. Now this chip change has affected me. I installed the latest released version on my older units no problem, but I do have all the unnecessary stuff removed or disabled. If you know of a model router that fits the requirements above with more flash and a comparetive price range I am all ears. Otherwise I am going to continue to try to find a way to make this work. I may fail at doing so, but I will try.

You needed to ask? It's literally in the message. linux kernel v5.15.104
Not much has changed in the NOR portion of the kernel, so it could be trivially applied against more recent kernels.

... I've put together a patch for it against 5.15.104...

I've made the patch and was able to compile latest (ok, last month latest) snapshot which works with it. The patch actually presents in mainline 5.15 kernel, but for 16MB chip of the same vendor, it's easy to modify it. Also the squashfs build has a limitation on ~8MB - need to turn off all debugging and compile no additional packages with the package.
But after all manipulations I still can't flash it with sysupgrade build. Initramfs goes well, I don't see any memory chip related errors in kernel log (which though doesn't mean the chip is fully supported). But after flash with sysupgrade there is still no result. Unfortunately I stuck on a stage of wiring serial connector to the device (on some reason I don't see anything from the device, device is FT232 based). Which is I would expect 'cause my experience here is pretty amateur and limited. Just to confirm - does 57600 8-N-1 settings work for this device?
I even opened another topic regarding this - Wavlink WL-WN570HA1 stuck in initramfs mode . I can share the patch & config (which still will require to compile everything from sources) or even binary squashfs & initfamfs compiled images if anyone wants to try.

In my case, the problem was solved by patching the kernel for a different type of memory. Instead of GigaDevice GD25Q64CSIG, I have Fudan FM25Q64.

Sysupgrade passed and even almost everything works - the low ТХ power of the 2.4 GHz radio and does not receive the IP-address of the device on the 5 GHz radio. I'm figuring it out...

We continue to deal with the problems...
So, the maximum radio power 2.4 GHz = 16 dBm (39 mV). I changed the country, included kmod-mt76 in the firmware (it wasn’t there initially) - nothing helps.
What to do? Where to dig next?

Seems I have the very same device as you @Morpheus68 !
I didn't try the initframfs firmware but as you, the provided openwrt firmware on the device page refuses to boot, I flashed yours and yes it does boot correctly !

I got the VLAN feature working on the eth0 port.
I was not able to use the wifi feature though, it seems very weak indead, maybe so weak than it's not even managing to pass my DHCP requests or even my PINGs when I setup a static IP...

I'm down to test anything you can produce but sad to say I'm not savvy enough to be able to help much at that level of coding...

I can share a few things already but are probably far away on the list of wished since getting wireless to work is kindof a must on this device, just in case though :

  • seems opkg fails to update and wget claims invalid SSL certificate for https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/23.05.2/packages/mipsel_24kc/telephony/Packages.gz so I believe the Letsencrypt CA got lost somewhere or needs adding in a later step of the build ? or maybe an issue on my current flash, it did work in a past flash as you'll see in the below other topic
  • seems this build doesn't come with ssl and had issues installing luci-openssl with some dependency issues, even opkg --force-deps didn't solve the issue for me

Anyway, what I'm realy sharing is the thanks for your hard work and the knowledge you're doing it for yourself but others too, and I'll be doing my best to help out even if it's not much, I'm a decent linux sysadmin if not a hardware person maybe I can be of assistance, and moral support you'll have for sure !

Is your Wifi not working at all?
For me, 2.4 GHz works quite well - the maximum radio power is rather weak (I can only select 16 dBm as the maximum).
But 5GHz seems to not work at all - either it does not receive an IP address or the speed is very low on a channel above 60.
And don’t forget - the firmware is very much cut off - there is no DHCP, firewall, PPP...
I'll put together a more complete one a little later.
