Hello,
I have been running openwrt on a Linksys WRT32X router with Expessvpn on my home network for over 4-5 years, it has worked flawlessly ever since. It`s running on version:
18.06.4 r7808-ef686b7292 / LuCI openwrt-18.06 branch (git-19.170.32094-4d6d8bc)
Can this version be upgraded in one step or would I have do it in multple steps?
Thanks in advance
I would recommend multiple steps -- this may be required anyway if your device made a transition to DSA or had partition size changes.
Your configs will not be compatible from 18.06 to 23.05, so you'll be configuring from scratch after the upgrades are complete.

I did the followig steps:
Sysupgrade from the 18.06 web interface to 19.07.10 then to 21.02.0 and then to 23.05.2
Success! Of course I had to redo my settigs
Thanks
Glad it all worked!
