TP-Link EAP615 v1.2

Hi,

is there a chance to run OpenWrt on the v1.2 of the EAP615?

I have two v1 running with OpenWrt, but the way to install it, does not work on the v1.2 anymore.grml...

I compared images of v1.0 (https://fcc.io/2AXJ4EAP615WALL) with images of v1.2 (https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/2BCGWEAP615GPW). Maybe others can spot more (the internals look quite different, even if the outside is similar), but it seems while v1.0 uses a MT7621DAT (MIPS), v1.2 uses an EN7529CT (ARM): even the main processor architecture is different.

This does not necessarily mean that it would be hard to support OpenWRT on it (I have no idea), but it is unlikely that "a small change from v1.0" will do it.

the second link is not the v1.2 version of the eap615. It is the GPON version with fibre.

I see, thanks for the clarification. I was fooled, because the also linked manual mentions "EAP615-Wall / EAP615GP-Wall" and "REV1.2.0".

I could only find a few places that actually mentioned the version in the FCC documents. However, there is a change request letter to modify the original 2AXJ4EAP615WALL from 2021, dated 2025-10-16, and this says "we attest that there is no hardware change". I am not sure which version this is for, though.

Without more information from the manufacturer or the FCC: you say "the way to install it, does not work on the v1.2 anymore". Can you be more specific?

You also may find people with more experience in that specific router here: EAP615-Wall, do you know what chipset it is?

in order for someone to be able to maybe help, please be more specific: which specific steps did you do (describe all, from the beginning), where did you get different results than expected, what did you expect and what did you get instead?

I have confirmed that the FCC ID for hardware v1.2 (non GP) is the same as v1, so that's good. There is just one firmware available from TP-Link, however, 1.5.10, which is what mine shipped with. I can also confirm that cliclientd is not an available command, even in elevated mode.

Can you tell us more what you mean with "not available"? Is the file not there (/usr/bin/cliclientd) or do you not have permissions to execute it or is the subcommand "stopcs" not available?

I am asking because there is this on https://openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/eap225:

Warning - July 2026: newer EAP225-Outdoor v3 APs are v3.20 hardware revision shipped with a 5.2.4 firmware which has a limited CLI. cliclientd stopcs is not recognized anymore. At the moment, it's impossible to install OpenWRT at all, neither downgrade to 5.1.11 TP-Link firmware.

It might still be possible to do this, just not using exactly those steps. But that is essentially finding a (maybe just slightly) different route into the system. Some older versions of that binary are available here: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/gpl-code/ and you could follow parts of https://www.reddit.com/r/TPLink_Omada/comments/1i2kzxo/real_root_access_to_eap670/ to get write access in /tmp, then copy the older binary (and possibly some dependencies) over and try with that. With any luck, it's just the new cli binary that has fewer options and an older version would work just fine. But exactly what to do is a little hard to go through in the forum.

I don't believe the cliclientd file is there, although it is difficult to tell as ssh is restricted. Here are all the commands available (with "privileged" commands enabled):

I'm don't think your much-appreciated suggestions will work. There is no GPL code for the EAP615-Wall, just the EAP615GP-Wall. Also, most commands are completely restricted from an ssh session (ps, mkdir, cd, etc).

the linked "gpl"-files are, afaik, not for the gl-version, e.g. https://static.tp-link.com/upload/gpl-code/2025/202509/20250926/EAP615-Wallv1.20.tar.gz.

However, if the cli is as restricted as it seems, you need to find a new way into the system. It is unlikely that there is no way at all, it is a question of looking for the easiest one. Speaking of that: does downgrading the firmware work maybe? I know - it's unlikely, but also something easy to check.

I also have two EAP615-WALL v1 successfully running with OpenWRT.

I needed now a third one.

So this is just for verification for others.

The new device is a HW v1.2 Device with a v1.5.10 Firmware, Build 20250903 Rel. 49784(4555)

I could enable SSH and connect to it, but without any available commands.

So the firmware signature and certificate verification checks cannot be disabled anymore. Kind of a Tivoization :frowning: if there is any GPL Code involved. I hope everyone now prefers GPLv3+ over GPLv2-only.

I'll return the TP-Link device and move to GL-iNet and CUDY devices alternatives instead, as these companies are more OpenWRT friendly.
