Support for TL-WR840N Ver 6.0

So, here in Brazil, the V6 is out....
In Brazil, the 840 is selling as 849(BR). It is the same hardware from 840 for V4 and V5. We use the same firmware without problem.
The hardware for V6 has changed a bit. It is still the MEDIATEK MT7628NN, and 4M of flash, but RAM is down to 32M (Was 64 in V4 and V5).
It also change the MTD layout. The boot was 0x20000 and now is 0x10000.

OK... It is working...
The system is the same as v5, only need to change DTS file: SPI boot partition is size 0x10000, and firmware partition starts at 0x10000. Memory also change to 0x2000000.
The kernel pad-extra also change from 128k to 64k in image.
The IMAGE_SIZE gets an additional 64K :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello, can anyone help me?
I've build some WR840N V6 firmware by configuring some parameter like in this thread

i flashed the firmware via TFTP method using reset button, and it's bricked
i realized it has bug on tftp recovery flashing after reading this thread

Now i'm trying to reflash it with original TP-Link firmware, which i had downloaded on official websites
I have some problem, when i send TFTPBOOT command, it's working like charm,
But erase command didn't show any output, just outputing usage message
And the cp.b command didn't show successfull copy message, and if i restart the devices, still no luck

does it means tp-link has rebuilding the u-boot command so we can't flash our firmware manually?

When i use tftp recovery with reset button, the routers load the file at 0x80060000 memory, then they copy it from 0x80070000 to 0x00010000, count 0x3D0000, which means i need to pad it for 64K (65536), but even i padded it, the firmware still stripped because the count is 0x3D0000 which is smaller than original firmware instead (0x3e0200), and yes, it's still make it failed to decompressing the image.

Can anyone help me to get this devices unbricked? The V5 and V6 had some similiarities, just the firmware partition start at 0x10000 and the ram memory down to 32M

Sorry for the delay guys... I was working on another project ...
So... the flash can be done using the tftp method, used in other tplinks (hold the reset button while starting)...
The DTS can be the same of v5, just memory need to be 0x2000000 and partition 0 is 0x10000
The firmware needs to be padded in the makefile:
IMAGE/tftp-recovery.bin := pad-extra 64k | $$(IMAGE/factory.bin)

Hi, i try make this bin file, but i totally newby with openwrt builder. I modified 840nv5 dts file, i think its good. But i don't know which makefile i need modify, i modified the makefile in ramips folder and add extre row, is it good? Or i totally missundersstood? The make command ended succesfully, but how can i check it is good or not?

Thanks for your reply, help and patient. I modified mt76x8.mk. Now the make command also run succesfully but now i get 2 bin file. One is tftp_recovery. I tried install with tftp but its now bricked. It's stuck in blinking led(Green - Orange- 6sec-again green next orange). What could wrong? What can i do now? or can you send me your version?

Hi guys! Just got myself tl-wr840n v6.Apparently they do sell them in Russia too.
I want to install openwrt on it, tho I never used the builder and don't want to brick it the first day I got it.
But I need it to be able to connect to one wi-fi (wwan) and host another wi-fi (wlan), which doesnt fit into either WISP mode nor Range extender mode.
So, yeah, openwrt it is.
Can any of you guys who made it work on v6 share the working image and short instructions on installing it?
I did install stable images on multiple tp-link routers before, mainly using web page.

I posted on another thread (search for WR849N) an image for the 849Nv6 that should work on the 840Nv6, just flash it using TFTP. I did the same modifications as @gaspare . In fact, for the 849Nv5 I used the image for the 840Nv5, so it should work both ways.

Please beware that my image does not have LUCI installed, so you may want to compile your own with what you need and install using sysupgrade once you have a running OpenWRT on your router.

PS: Indeed, this Thursday I was buying a 849 and the shop gave a discount because it was sold without the box - they told me that the box had WR840N written on it instead of WR849N, although the sticker said 849, that was why they were selling it discounted.

Hi from Brazil. I buy to one WR840N(BR) and started looking one way to put openwrt on it, and found this forum. I talked to support and they say this router have 256mb of ram and 32mb of flash.
So we have 2 situations. Any one have opened it to check this?

Ps.: update These board have a ZENTEL A3S56D40GTP 256MB DDR 400.

They told you the size in Megabits. 256 Megabits = 32Megabytes ; 32 Megabits = 4 Megabytes.
