[Solved] GL-MT6000 Ovpn client takes down router completely?

Hello. I bought 3x GL-MT6000 to run Openwrt to replace some Asus routers.

These routers are at 3 different locations and are connected using OpenVPN in a star configuration (1 server and 3 clients). Using the "allow client<->client" setting in AsusMerlin, I am able to push the routes and access all 3 networks.

I decided to test 1 of the 3 MT6000 by replacing 1 of the Asus routers. I flashed the latest 23.05.5 firmware on it and configured the client using the ovpn file used for all the other clients.

Interestingly enough, a few seconds after the connection is established, the router becomes unresponsive. It will no longer respond to any request (ping, webpage...) and no longer work.

If I reboot it, the problem remains (as it tries to connect to the VPN again after reboot). If I disconnect the WAN connection and reboot, the device works fine. If I disconnect the WAN port while the device is unresponsive, it never becomes responsives.

I know this config file works on Asus routers and the official openvpn client for windows. The config does not reroute internet traffic, just pushes routes for the networks (192.168.10.x, 192.168.100.x, 192.168.150.x and 192.168.200.x)

I figure maybe a route that is being pushed bugs something out?

Would it make sense that an OpenVPN client connection takes down the device completely?

I am unable to grab a log file since the device becomes completely unresponsive. Any suggestions for fetching it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

let's take a look at your config files:

Please connect to your OpenWrt device using ssh and copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button:
grafik
Remember to redact passwords, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have:

ubus call system board
cat /etc/config/network
cat /etc/config/wireless
cat /etc/config/dhcp
cat /etc/config/firewall
cat /etc/config/openvpn

wow that was fast...will head back to that location to get the output with the same configuration and setup. Should have it within 30mins.

root@OpenWrt:~#

You have a conflict... your local router is at 192.168.150.1, and you've got a route pushing from the OpenVPN server that overlaps (presumably a /24 network 192.168.150.0/24).

Change your lan IP on the OpenWrt device to something that is unique. Maybe 192.168.50.1? (note that is 50 instead of 150)

I figured it out before reading your response and you are correct, but I will clarify:

Asus merlin will push the client routes to clients minus theirs (logically). This router is replacing the 150 route, but I had created a new user to test the connection. Since it wasn't the 150 user that connected, the server was pushing that 150 route to the Openwrt device and causing it to "crash".

I used the 150 user account and it properly worked. This config was done so long ago that I had forgotten about that!

This leads me to ask if the way openwrt handles this by becoming unresponsive is expected behaviour?

Thank you for taking the time to help troubleshoot this!

glad this is now fixed.

Yes. And I would expect this to happen on any/all routing platforms. OpenVPN is pushing a route that overlaps the lan, so the addressing causes a conflict. From the router's perspective, someone else has that same address... routing will fail, but so will local access to the router because it's not possible to have two devices with the same address.
