RG-EW3200GX PRO does not boot after flashing OpenWrt

Hi xal3xhx,
I also have a router RG-EW3200GX PRO and follow the link: https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/ruijie/ruijie_rg-ew3200gx_pro to flash openwrt firmware to this router.
The flashing process is completed, but it cannot boot up. The boot log like as:

ERROR: can't get kernel image!

Can you give me some advice on this error?

Thank you,

Ruijie <> Reyee ?

Yes.
Reyee is the SMB sub-brand launched by Ruijie in 2014, including 4 major product lines: switch, router, wireless, and home products

Guess you didn't get the point ...

There are separate images for Ruijie and Reyee, did you use the correct one ?
You linked to the Ruijie, posting in the Reyee thread.

I used the images in the link: https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/ruijie/ruijie_rg-ew3200gx_pro
openwrt-22.03.2-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-initramfs-kernel.bin and openwrt-22.03.2-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
This thread is also refered in the "Forum search" in the above link.

based on OpenWrt support for Reyee AX3200 E5? - #7 by xal3xhx you're then posting in the wrong thread ...

Moved to new topic (old topic was for different device).

Can you share to me the new related topic?
Thanks

Yes, I see that.
Thanks

Hi everyone! I’m struggling with an Ruijie RG-EW3200GX PRO after loading OpenWRT it won´t boot anymore.
Before this post I’ve already tried lots of alternatives and searched the forum/internet for many days.
As far as I can diagnose, the image “openwrt-22.03.5-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin” refuses to load because of some address/partition/layout mismatch.
I attached console logs, screenshots, and photos of the router, please note that the PCB shows V1.1 while the box, bottom sticker and model show V1.00, so I assume that the imaged used is correct.
Thank you all people in advance for your great job and effort to support the OpenWrt community.

IMPORTANT: I've collected all the debug information possible into one .zip file attached to this post, including: serial console logs, OpenWrt initramfs screenshots and router photos.

Just to summarize the system boot error serial console log is:

This doesn't seem like the install information provided - as it doesn't mention the sysupgrade file for install initial install. Did you follow the installation instructions found from the Wiki?

https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=ce8a33b021a703b1933f627835f6cdc88c0ecdd3

FYI for future reference, there's functionality to paste output and images in the forum. Using a 3rd party app is not necessary (especially in a format that requires download and opening/extracting - which could have security implications for some members).

It kind of does...

4. (important) Back up firmware(mtd7) partitions with:
        dd if=/dev/mtd7 of=/tmp/firmware.bin
and then download the firmware.bin image via SCP.
5. Flash the OpenWrt sysupgrade firmware

For initial install, on TFTP?

That step is usually after a successful boot.

Flash instruction:
1. Serve the initramfs.img using a TFTP server with address 10.10.10.3.

The OP stated:

The flashing process is completed, but it cannot boot up.

Perhaps I misunderstood which step the OP was having issue with, if so, my apologies.

EDIT: Therefore, the new poster should use the proper steps too - or make a new thread because they tried to flash OpenWrt sysupgrade instead.

true, the statement can be interpreted in several ways, and the C&Ps are unreadable.

@topo22 you can't assume RG-EW3200GX PRO and the RG-E5 are the same, sw wise, even if the hw's identical, use wiki entry for your device.

Thank you all for the quick replies!!
I will describe the installation I’ve performed step-by-step:
Router Identified as: Ruijie RG-EW3200GX PRO v1.00
Guide url used: https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/ruijie/ruijie_rg-ew3200gx_pro
NOTE: Router stock firmware was: ReyeeOS 1.204.1521

  1. Installed “openwrt-22.03.5-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-initramfs-kernel.bin” using stock firmware update web-gui.
  2. The router rebooted OK with OpenWrt v22.03.5, showing a warning message that it was running in “initramfs recovery mode”, then I flashed the “openwrt-22.03.5-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin” using OpenWrt upgrade web-gui (luci), no warnings where displayed during the flash/upgrade process (unchecked “keep settings” , unchecked “include in backup…”
  3. The router will not boot anymore!!
  4. Got a USB-TTL serial device, opened the case and started the “debugging”, then I saw the message:
[do_read_image_blks] This is a FIT image,img_size = 0x7cfb8c
[do_read_image_blks] img_blks = 0x7cfb8c

  1. Then I followed the steps provided in: https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=ce8a33b021a703b1933f627835f6cdc88c0ecdd3
The firmware.bin transferred via SCP is around 14.5 MB

From this point I’ve tried many things without success:
a) Booted “openwrt-22.03.5-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-initramfs-kernel.bin” via TFTP OK, retried flash upgrade to “openwrt-22.03.5-mediatek-mt7622-ruijie_rg-ew3200gx-pro-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin”, upgrade succeded with NO warnings, but after reboot got the same error described in step 4)
b) Tried to flash the latest snapshot build “sysupgrade” version --> same error as step 4 (downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/mediatek/mt7622/)
c) Tried to restore stock firmware by flashing the firmware.bin (backed-up) --> same error
d) Tried to download the lastest stock firmware from the web but it didn’t work, apparently because of a different format/package type (tried the .bin and the .gz)
e) By now I’m able to boot from TFTP using the initramfs image of OpenWrt but I can’t go any further…

@frollic of course you are right!, I'm aware that the RG-E5 and RG-EW3200GX PRO are not the same, at all times I've tried to follow the instructions provided for the RG-EW3200GX PRO model

@lleachii I was able to try the TFTP install in step 5) (I understood the initial install was possible by using the stock firmware upgrade, initramfs and then sysupgrade images, perhaps I was wrong?) Thanks for your comments about the forum (this is my second post  )
If there is any other info I can provide please let me know and I will ASAP

Thanks a lot!

Not according to the git commit, and apparently also not in reality.

I might still have an md dump from my RG-E5, you could try to dd it to flash, but I can't guarantee it'll work.

Well, clearly "the inicial install" was in reality the "initial crahs", haha!
I'm willing to try the dump if you can find it and provide it (thanks in advance!).
On the other hand, I'm wondering if I made any mistakes during the initial install steps or if the results would have been the same if I followed the steps in https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=ce8a33b021a703b1933f627835f6cdc88c0ecdd3 ??

I used to own the RG-E5, and I think the steps were the same. I had zero issues flashing it ...

here you go - https://uptobox.com/qui8q7raxzla

the guy who bought my RG-E5 actually used the fw upgrade menu in openwrt to flash it back, instead of doing dd via ssh.

Hello @frollic thanks a lot for you job, effort and help!!
