Since the https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/packages/ switched to apk binaries, I wonder if the forum-wide warning/notice can be posted that if you have a snapshots image/install on your device with opkg/ipk binaries, you can no longer update package feeds nor update/install new packages.
As more time passes since the switch, we'll have more people posting about it every day.
I agree. I'll add a pinned topic at the top of the announcements page.
I'll make a quick note that directs people to the other ongoing discussions. Which thread is best to reference? This one seems to be the most authoritative:
@efahl - Any thoughts about this and which thread to reference? Also, since you seem originated the referenced topic... I'll give you the right of first refusal to write the 'announcement' post and/or to nominate someone else for that task. I'm also happy to write it if that's easiest.
(@stangri - the offer also extends to you if you want to write something for me to pin).
I'd say you might as well point to that current thread, as it seems to have gathered up almost all of the pertinent discussion and is being widely pointed to in many of the "hey opkg is busted!" threads.
I'm a tiny bit uncomfortable with the idea of writing the announcement, I've been trying to play more of a detective role than that of a news reporter. On the other hand, if it takes the burden off the devs who are actually writing the code, I've got no problem writing something.
I'm happy to write the announcement. Although are there any devs we should tag into this discussion to ensure they are cool with me writing it? (I don't want to steal their thunder and/or make any incorrect statements, although I'm sure I'd get feedback if anything is wrong)
There's definitely a wealth of information in the The future is now: opkg vs apk thread started by @efahl, however I think it would be better if the first post in the pinned thread quickly explained the problem and offered options rather than go into details on the apk vs opkg.
Obviously, it would be greatly beneficial if The future is now: opkg vs apk is linked from the pinned post for more information/background.
Given the urgent need for something like that before more people turn up, I think whoever can get the time to draft a post like that first should get the pinned post, I'm sure @psherman can do a great job. I agree would be nice to tag devs to review the pinned post.
I'm happy to do it, but I won't be able to get to it until tomorrow sometime. If anyone wants to write a draft of the message in this thread, I can move it into place as soon as I get a chance and/or help wordsmith it a bit if needed.
My plan for that thread is/was to collect all the pertinent data, make a wiki page, then completely rewrite the open post into "link to wiki".
I think I'll do that now, but also add a See This Post First! linking to the announcement page at the very top in case someone stumbles into the middle of things.
I have created a topic in the announcements section and pinned it to the top. If anyone has any feedback about the language, I'm happy to make edits accordingly.
Also... I decided to close the 'announcement' thread so that it doesn't get any additional posts... instead, comments and discussion will hopefully be directed to "The future is now: opkg vs apk" thread which I think is the probably the best place for it. If anyone feels strongly that the announcement thread should be opened to allow comments, I'm certainly willing to reconsider.
I will likely edit the message slightly, as you currently say there "snapshots" meaning main/master branch and builds from it. There are nowadays also buildbot snapshots from 23.05 and 24.10, so "snapshot" is not automatically the main branch, although it often is referred that way. This change is so far only in main, and likely later in 24.10. But will never touch the 23.05 snapshots.
