How to install on Aerohive AP350?

Installing OpenWrt on Aerohive AP350

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Aerohive_HiveAP_350
The AP is essentially identical to the Aerohive HiveAP 330 besides the antenna configuration

From : https://github.com/lede-project/source/commit/f2b7d9dc1ca3d33f14961cf2885639f4f9e8965e

Flashing:

  1. Hook into UART (9600 baud) and enter U-Boot. You may need to enter a
    password of administrator or AhNf?d@ta06 if prompted.

  2. Once in U-Boot, tftp boot the initramfs image:
    dhcp;
    tftpboot 0x1000000 192.168.1.101:lede-mpc85xx-p1020-hiveap-330-initramfs.zImage;
    tftpboot 0x6000000 192.168.1.101:lede-mpc85xx-p1020-hiveap-330.fdt;
    bootm 0x1000000 - 0x6000000;

  3. Once booted, scp over the sysupgrade file and sysupgrade the device to flash LEDE to the NAND.
    sysupgrade /tmp/lede-mpc85xx-p1020-hiveap-330-sysupgrade.img

I can access U-Boot and have set up tftp OK

I download the following :
https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/mpc85xx/p1020/

hiveap-330-initramfs-kernel.bin
hiveap-330-squashfs-fdt.bin
hiveap-330-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

I can add the bin file via tftp, but can not use bootm - Wrong Image Format for bootm command

Searching for a solution I located :
https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=98089bb8ba82e41f09e73c6492ba9183cb44e614

mpc85xx: Use uncompressed kernel on the HiveAP-330
It seems that newer builds of OpenWRT have a gzip kernel larger than 2MB~, which for some reason fails to boot on this board.
However, we have 8MB of kernel space and currently the uncompressed kernel is 6.5MB~, so we have some space to grow until a better solution is worked out.

https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=b683f1c36d8a791f3d8b53c2c2748fa89bcf94af

mpc85xx: Use gzip compressed kernel on HiveAP-330

After commit 1e41de2f48 ("mpc85xx: convert TL-WDR4900 v1 to simpleImage") XZ compression of zImage was enabled.
This change exposed a problem with the HiveAP-330 images, which was fixed by foregoing the compression on the kernel altogether with commit 98089bb8ba8
("mpc85xx: Use uncompressed kernel on the HiveAP-330").

This patch adds back the gzip compression of the kernel image by utilizing the generic OpenWRT uImage method instead of relying on the PowerPC bootwrapper script that did it previously.

How can I install OpenWrt on Aerohive AP?

Do I need to unpack the bin file?

Should I make my own image?

The kernel is already uncompressed from what I can tell (file output):

u-boot legacy uImage, POWERPC OpenWrt Linux-4.19.57, Linux/PowerPC, OS Kernel Image (Not compressed), 9159120 bytes, Sun Jul 14 12:02:20 2019, Load Address: 0x00000000, Entry Point: 0x00000000, Header CRC: 0xD3E0C1D1, Data CRC: 0x69AD0ECD

There is an 18.06.4 release build for that model, you could try it. The initram kernel is only 4.5 MB there.

Problem was with the tftp software I was using.
Using another router with OpenWRT already installed - ip 192.168.1.11
Installed atftpd, mounted an USB drive with the firmware - formatted as FAT.
Installed kmod-usb-serial-pl2303 and picocom - to be able to access AP350 U-BOOT via an USB to serial connector.

After boot, need to configure network access.
Using picocom

set network.lan.gateway='192.168.1.11'
uci commit
service network restart

Can now use WINSCP to transfer sysupgrade to /tmp

sysupgrade /tmp/openwrt-18.06.4-mpc85xx-p1020-hiveap-330-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

Go make a hot drink and wait :slight_smile:

N.B. I will post the logs of this later. I have a batch of AP350 to install OpenWRT on.

Hi there, I know this is an old post, but I just got around to flashing my AP350's.
Here's some info that I didn't find above:

Devices with U-Boot 2009.11 (Sep 03 2012) DO NOT have tftpboot option available, but NFS boot works.

I had to flash this device several times, and I got the "Wrong Ramdisk Image Format" error in U-Boot, flashed again and again. Also made sure to run "uci commit" a few times, in case the nvram was getting in the way.
Also, this "older" AP, connected to network on its own, I did not have to use any uci settings to have it pull IP over DHCP.

Devices with U-Boot 2009.11 (Dec 29 2014) DO HAVE tftpboot available, NFS still works fine.

This "never" devices (I have two of those) flashed at the first attempt, I DID have to set network gateway, uci commit and restart networking for it to obtain my local IP so that I could SCP the sysupgrade image.

I did not try USB boot on any of my devices (didn't need to, since nfs or tftpboot worked).

One note about NFS, I thin U-Boot uses NFSv2, so some OS's may have issues with serving such an old protocol version. I tried from FreeBSD - no luck, then I tried from Linux, with NFSv2 enabled and it worked...

So far so good.

I also have some older Aerohives where I haven't gotten tftp to work. usb also doesn't work in u-boot.

However, I've used both kermit (setenv baudrate then loadb) and NFS does work:

dhcp;
nfs 0x1000000 192.168.1.191:/ah/openwrt-21.02.0-mpc85xx-p1020-aerohive_hiveap-330-initramfs-kernel.bin;
nfs 0x6000000 192.168.1.191:/ah/openwrt-21.02.0-mpc85xx-p1020-aerohive_hiveap-330-squashfs-fdt.bin;
bootm 0x1000000 - 0x6000000;

Also, a number of the units don't boot after the sysupgrade unless you go back to u-boot and run:
set_current_image image1
