Hello in short i have mini pc with opnsense bridged with virtual openwrt. I got Intel ax200 and im strugling to make it working. I success only 2.4 ghz barely. So im not trying to find analouge to that but if i want to spend some money i want to find best one. Dual/tri band with good quality and signal spreading range. Tnx all cheers
Please use the forum search, this topic has been discussed many times before.
a) Intel wireless cards are not suitable for AP mode, exactly for the reason you noticed - they have only minimal AP mode support and exclusively for 2.4 GHz
b) the sensible solution is a supported (plastic) AP running OpenWrt as dedicated hardware, it's going to be cheaper, faster and more reliable - and you get concurrent dual-band on top. Even better you can place one or more of them where it makes sense from a wireless coverage point of view. Cheap (new) wifi6 ones already start in the 20-30 EUR/ USD range (performance requirements are less important for AP usage, two lower-end ones in different parts of the house might end up being better than a single high-end option, but the sky and your budget are the limit) and there's also the used markets to look at.
Im searching for 2 days. Nobody extractly said this card is good. They mention some mediatek and some realtek. That taiwanese brand is unavaliable to me, shipping is too high. So for a home mini firewall and central place with build in wifi what is best card for my mini opnsense pc.
As was stated above, the best option is to use an external purpose built AP. It can be an all-in-one wifi router that you use as an AP only, or it could be one that was originally built only as an AP (like the Unifi/Aruba/Omada series and the like).
Just to give a few entry-level options for <30 bucks:
- ax3000t
- dap-x1860
- covr-x1860
- wsm20
The best of this bunch would be the ax3000t, but it's non-trivial to flash - the others are more or less equivalent. This is not exactly a recommendation for either of those, as there may be better options in your region, but they will beat any mini-PCIe, M.2 or PCIe you can buy (again, you will find detailed reasons for this via the search function).
I just want to do opposite to reduce devices at home. So i just need good wifi 2.4/5 ghz card that work perfectly. I have good hardware and only several devices at home.
If that is the goal, the best option is a purpose built all-in-one wifi router. There are some great ones out there.
Cant find any m.2 card under these names. This is some ap seperatly. Not suitable for me
That's what it recommends. Replace that idea of using mini PCIe cards with real access points.
I understand your reccomendations, my simple question was "what is the best m2 card for openwrt" and i cant get ansver from anyone here
That may have a reason, which would become clear by attending to the search function.

Hint, "chunk of metal" might be a good search term for starters.
I dont undestand. I search all google, nobody cleary say a card. So i need to spend for several cards just because nobody want to say what card is good for openwrt
Perhaps nobody can recommend a card, because nobody has found a card that works, and that is why everybody is recommending an external AP.
Any card that meets your requirements will melt into slag inside that case.
The AP suitable cards get very hot and chew tons of power. And even then still suck compared to a dedicated AP
Tnx for reply, power spending is not relevant. So u want to say that cards is not realible and get stuck? All cards???
Also i still dont know what card.
I pick some of them that i find on net and people usually saying they work. My needs are 2.4/5 eventualy 2.4/5/6 in same time stable for home usage 24/7/365
In the box you just bought for 300 bucks ?
Look, you haven't done any investigation before you came here - nor obviously anything at all since you started this thread. It doesn't help either not to state your actual requirements, making us fill in the blanks with guesswork.
You’ll find the power consumption very relevant if you m.2 ports get cooked.
But it’s your hardware mate, get a couple of 7612’s and then a few more to replace them when they cook
I buy mini pc from picture for 300$ with ax200
