Belkin RT3200/Linksys E8450 WiFi AX discussion

I updated to OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r17517-46dec9952b and have lost the 5ghz radio. Only the 2.4 radio is working. :frowning:

Yeah, you need to clone the OpenWrt repo and revert before this commit:

Then compile the images.

Are you on the UBI version? If so first you need to flash the latest UBI installer which is 0.5.3 and then upgrade to latest snapshots.

I'm on OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r17502-0470159552 for Linksys E8450 UBI and both radios are working.

I am on ubi. I guess I need to see how to upgrade the ubi installer.

Force flash the ubi recovery installer, just like how you flashed the first time.

Should I unclick keep settings keep current configuration? I have made an archive.

You should

  • unclick the "keep settings" and flash the UBI recovery installer,
  • use that to flash the normal sysupgrade, and
  • then restore settings from archive.

Thanks! I'm back now and I have both radios.

I am running Snapshot r17488-64be0eadc1, but I am still having issues with AP. It crashes and goes back to recovery and I think it's because of the number of hosts connecting 5Ghz network. Is there any hosts limit for 5Ghz network? Below is the RAMOOPS output from pstore.

You won't see much improvement on single device throughput via WiFi6. What you'll see rather is that if you let, say, 5x WiFi5 devices do iperf3 tests simultaneously vs. 5x WiFi6 devices, the throughput will be much more stable (and higher, per device!) in the latter case.

Besides, for most wireless devices, even 100Mbps is enough, if stable. Most WiFi connected devices don't have high bandwidth requirement (you won't be downloading a 50-60GB BR-RIP on your smartphone), so IMO it's better if you get stable 150-200Mbps on all devices instead of a single device managing 1Gbps+. Which is exactly what WiFi6 is supposed to achieve.

Looks like the same issue that myself and a few others have experienced. Supposedly there is a fix but it hasn't been committed yet.

According to this (https://dongknows.com/linksys-e8450-ax3200-wi-fi-6-router-review/) this model should be able to do ~900Mbps at ~10ft range and ~700Mbps at ~40ft range?

Cheers.

Hi guys. I don't have wlan1 AX (5G Hz) at all in the latest snapshot (r17520-5ef4608c02, UBI) on RT3200. only wlan0 (wifi 4) is available in luci. I reset the firmware and the result is the same. It was after a sysupgrade I performed, and I lost the wifi. there is no file in /sys/fs/pstore for crash logs. Do you guys have any ideas?

You just need to flash dangowrt's latest installer

So I'm on UBI now already. Do i flash openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-initramfs-recovery-installer.itb again?

Yes. You need that recovery upgrade first (to overcome the errors from the new flash driver) and then from recovery use sysupgrade to install the normal firmware.

EDIT:
you need at least version 0.5.3 or later, or a self-built up-to-date version of the recovery installer.

Thanks. It works!

I believe 801.11r is broken at the moment on this router:

Wed Sep 15 21:09:12 2021 daemon.err hostapd: nl80211: kernel reports: key addition failed
Wed Sep 15 21:09:12 2021 daemon.err hostapd: nl80211: NL80211_ATTR_STA_VLAN (addr=XX ifname=wlan1 vlan_id=0) failed: -2 (No such file or directory)

Can anyone else please confirm?
