cat mtdblock2.txt
hexdump: /dev/mtdblock2: I/O error

I was importing a lot of stuff from when I had my WRT1900ACS set up (was trying to figure out wireless issues on that device). I just turned WMM back on.

You don't have kmod-mt7915-firmware (or something like that) installed. Not needed for 22.03.

You have to replace wpad-basic-wolfssl with full wpad version (wpad-wolfssl/wpad-openssl).

Thanks for the hint on wpad. I 've now replaced wpad-basic-wolfssl with wpad-openssl.
(Which is actually on my list of things to do. I don't know why I didn't do that last night.
Well, it was late already...)
And... you made my day. My wireless is back and humming nicely.

For completeness:
On the kenel module...: I cannot check that, that was on snapshot, which I do not have installed currently.

I still wonder how I got into that situation, I just upgraded from
895f38ca1efeb46f0cd3029c732e6156d4589eb0
to
6bc675c0bed969303f94bb59310081d92bf2e74a
by means of Attended Sysupgrade. I stronly assume firmware is also covered by that mechanism:

You don't have kmod-mt7915-firmware (or something like that) installed. Not needed for 22.03.

Hello, is it me or....why can't I find the factory.bin on [OpenWrt Wiki] Table of Hardware: Firmware downloads or OpenWrt Firmware Selector or [OpenWrt Wiki] Table of Hardware: Ideal for OpenWrt + 802.11ax supported? Thanks.

Because the is none for E8450/RT3200.

Read the installation instructions at Daniel's site.

To clarify, I followed [OpenWrt Wiki] Linksys E8450 (aka. Belkin RT3200) and tried to update the E8450 OEM firmware from 1.2.00.360516 to openwrt's 22.03.3 by using openwrt-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin that I downloaded from [OpenWrt Wiki] Table of Hardware: Firmware downloads to upgrade at vendor firmware Web UI upgrade page. But none worked. All four .bin has an error message, "10.0.1.1 says The image file is incorrect."

OEM also says, "Also, once you upgrade to FW 1.2.00.360516, you cannot roll back to previous unsigned firmware image, which is FW 1.1.x.x or 1.0.y.y." Does that mean factory reset won't bring back the OEM firmware? I am doing the non-UBI route, given I am a newbie here. Thanks.

Well, you didn't read the instructions linked in the previous message.
For OEM 1.2.0 you need the signed UBI installer image from Daniel's site.

(Later you will use the UBI sysupgrade images)

Due to lack of understanding, I might have bricked the router by upgrading via the OEM web interface with Daniel's UBI installer. What can I do next? The lights on the router seem normal, but I just can't find any network I previously set up to connect again. Pressed the reset button already and done power cycles per Daniel's GitHub page. Thx

the firmware flash from an OEM firmware to OpenWrt has naturally resetted everything.

The router should have the normal OpenWrt default: no wireless enabled, just the wired ethernet with router at 192.168.1.1

Doesn't the wired connection work?

You are a godsend and correct. The wired does work. I put down 192.168.1.1 but http://192.168.1.1/cgi-bin/luci/ was presented with a login screen and a user name of "root." What's the password to get into it? Ooops. No password set. Does that mean the router can never be reset to factory? How do I go from here? Appreciate your guidance deeply.

If you used the UBI installer, you should now have the OpenWrt recovery initramfs instance running. That is not yet the usual OpenWrt, but just a safe recovery instance.

You will use that to flash an OpenWrt sysupgrade image so that you get the normal OpenWrt. (You can download one from Daniel, or you could take the 22.03.3 release for your device. Be sure to download the UBI variant of sysupgrade image,

OpenWrt default is the "root" user with no password, as you have now figured out. The recovery instance will remain without password, but once you have installed the normal OpenWrt, you can set password for root there.

Well, "factory" in OpenWrt speak usually means the initial OpenWrt installation image...
If you mean the original OEM firmware, returning to that is rather difficult with Rt3200/E8450, as the UBI conversion has also changed the initial u-boot bootloader etc.

Thanks again. I think it's working now. Earlier, it was very spotty, but then my ISP said I should also go into "Network" > "Interfaces" > "WAN" and change the protocol from DHCP to PPPoE and fill out user name and password.

I currently do not quite follow "Beam Forming and Enable Basic Service Set (BSS) coloring" and " Change the default CPU governor" in the post-install tips section. I am not a command line guy. Can I go to System > Startup > Local startup and add the language there? But that appears to be just /etc/rc.local? instead of /etc/config/wireless? Not sure if I have to keep the following existing words.

"# Put your custom commands here that should be executed once

the system init finished. By default this file does nothing.

exit 0"

Finally, for the 2.4g and 5g wifi SSIDs, they default to "access point" mode in "interface configuration" > "general setup" > "mode". Is that right?

E8450 is not a modem/router one-stop solution, right? It's just a router. Many thanks again.

I also want to install Wireguard package. Given this router's architecture is ARMv8 Processor rev 4, I can't seem to find it among the list below at [OpenWrt Wiki] package: wireguard-tools

Architectures:
aarch64_cortex-a53, aarch64_cortex-a72, aarch64_generic, arc_arc700, arc_archs, arm_arm1176jzf-s_vfp, arm_arm926ej-s, arm_cortex-a15_neon-vfpv4, arm_cortex-a5_vfpv4, arm_cortex-a7, arm_cortex-a7_neon-vfpv4, arm_cortex-a8_vfpv3, arm_cortex-a9, arm_cortex-a9_neon, arm_cortex-a9_vfpv3-d16, arm_fa526, arm_mpcore, arm_xscale, i386_pentium4, mips64_octeonplus, mips_24kc, mips_4kec, mips_mips32, mipsel_24kc, mipsel_24kc_24kf, mipsel_74kc, mipsel_mips32, powerpc_464fp, powerpc_8540, x86_64

FWIW, looks like I just bricked my new E8450 :frowning:

I read large chunks of this thread before starting, and then followed the instructions on the OpenWRT E8450 wiki page, which lead to dangowrt's github repo and more careful reading.

This is an E8450 which had v1.1 factory firmware.

Steps 1-10 worked fine and I was in the OpenWRT Recovery Image, then I flashed openwrt-22.03.1-mediatek-mt7622-linksys_e8450-ubi-squashfs-sysupgrade.itb ... and waited, and waited, and the power light just kept on flashing.

After 5 minutes of that, I powered off, unplugged, waited, re-plugged and restarted ... just a flashing power LED.
After 2 minutes of that, I powered off, unplugged, waited, re-plugged and restarted with the reset button held ... just a flashing power LED, it never turns yellow.

Is this a total brick now, or is it worth getting a TTL serial cable?

For sure, as it will give you and everyone else here more insights into what has happened and prevent the same damage from happening to other users. I suspect that what you may be dealing with is a broken SPI-NAND flash chip... But as the device did come up in recovery mode at least once, there is still some hope.

Also note that the same symptoms you are describing would also show in case you flashed the *-recovery.itb image instead of the *-recovery-installer.itb file in step 8. In this case the serial cable will give you another chance to flash the right image.

OK, I'll dig around in the old-shed-that-must-never-be-entered and see if I can find one of my old 3.3.v USB-to-serial cables.

Even if I can (or if I have to order a new one), I'm going to need some help in figuring out how to get the router apart, and what pigtail I'm going to need to attach to the router's motherboard.

OK, there's a video on YouTube about how to get into the case ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXijb8ZaxBg

And here's the same gentleman talking about how he unbricked his router ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgDbRJMG6uE

Looks like I have a path forward to follow.

That's positive! I am hoping that the flashing power-LED means that uBoot is still working OK, but I don't know if that's just a sign that the CPU itself is still working.

Hahahaha ... yes, if that's the case, then I'm definitely not going to get out of this with my pride intact, am I?

I think that I got it correct ... but is this something that we'll be able to tell if the USB-to-serial works, i.e. it would show either the factory uBoot or OpenWRT's UBI uBoot?

There is some info about JTAG in the wiki.

https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/e8450#jtag

Yes, exactly. Or a broken flash chip and unable to even load U-Boot (at that point things become more difficult...)
