ASUS TUF AX4200 - Install

Hi all,

I have just received my new ASUS TUF-AX4200.

After using OpenWRT for 5 years and installing it on an Archer C7 and Linksys WRT1900ACS v2 - I thought installing it on the AX4200 would be just as easy. Alas, it is not.

I've been trying to follow the instructions I've seen advising to interrupt the boot process when connected to the console. This is where I become stuck, where/how do I connect to the console? I have used a cisco console cable hundreds of times, and I have done TFTP-ing to devices before. I'm just incredibly lost with this one.

Hope someone is able to help.

I came across this, but I still haven't seen any mention of how one connects to the console. Unless I am missing something?

Because you dont have to - just upload one image, set fixed IP and in other web interface upload sysupgrade.

Just to clarify, are you saying I can just upload the kernel file - then do the sysupgrade one after as I have done previously?

The reason I ask, is that whenever I try and do that - I recieve the following error message.

"Firmware upgrade unsuccessful. This may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again."

For the web install via Asus interface, as said by @brada4, you need the trx image
Once installed, it reboot in initramfs mode and you can flash with a classic openwrt sysupgrade image.

Ah, I must've missed that. I've installed that and it's working now! Thank you so much both.

As a quick aside, do you know if I can do a 'save config' file from my WRT1900ACS v2 and then import it to the new AX4200? Just saves me rebuilding all my VLANs/WiFi. I don't mind if that's what I need to do though.

You can unzip old config backup and type back parameters.
