Archer C7 V2 Troubleshooting Drops (Logs)

Made a reddit post yesterday to try and troubleshoot long term and frequent issues I've been having with this router.

Had some advice there to disable 5Ghz, and to install kmod-ath10k-ct-smallbuffers which I did, but today, another wireless drop. This time, I grabbed the System & Kernel Log files before rebooting, and it was suggested on reddit that I post them here for troubleshooting, which I have below. System log is too long to post in its entirity, so this is the most recent part before the disconnect, concluding where you can see I logged into luci to check on things.

I am an absolute beginner when it comes to this, so can't interpret much of this, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It's a good question, and I was focusing on that part of the error log as well.

  1. Do I need it? I don't really know. I guess the whole world needs it eventually, but is it benefiting my devices or usage scenario right now? How can I determine this?
  2. Maybe the bigger question is why isn't it working? Presumably Comcast have IPV6 support now, and I believe my modem & router support it. Could I have some setting wrong?
  3. Is there actually a chance that IPV6 not connecting is causing my wireless drops?
  4. Finally, how do I remove it in luci? Do I just go to Network > Interfaces then hit Delete on WAN6?

Thank you!

That could be a very interesting solution. I am due to receive one of these routers from eBay and am getting slightly concerned about the WiFi performance. However I do really only have devices that connect through 5GHz so I’m assuming this issue would be less prevalent for me.

Apparently this has been an issue since 18.06 of OpenWRT. Would it be worth reverting to say 18.05? Seeing if the problem persists?

Also if you put that error message into Google, it seems to be something to do with the wan interface? A thread I found was from people using their routers as APs though so may not apply if the C7 is your only source of WiFi.

I found this issue, and some of the discussion pointed to no link local address being assigned. The output of ip -6 addr show returned:

eth0.2@eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 state UP qlen 1000
inet6 fe80::eade:27ff:fe77:771c/64 scope link tentative dadfailed
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

The "dad" is short for Duplicate Address Detection. That might be worth looking through.

  1. I assume you are a SOHO or home-user case. If that's true, you can leave the IPV6 on your wan interface running, but shut it off for your internal lan network. Your router can then handle the NAT. Go to "Network", "Interfaces", then "Edit" your lan interface. Under the "DHCP server" tab, click the "IPV6" tab and disable for top 3 items. (n.b. I am using my devices strictly as Access Points.)

  2. Yes, that is the bigger question. You need someone smarter than me. What I've done just works for me.

  3. Try it and see! Experiment!

  4. As I note above, just disable on your internal lan at first. See how it goes. Hopefully you will not need to disable on your WAN interface too.

Good luck!

Did this fix your WiFi op?

Just had my c7 delivered - WiFi is seemingly worse than my Virgin media hub 3 which is disappointing. Any ways to make. better?

I routinely have 100+ Mbs on my 5 GHZ. Sometimes 200+, depending upon time of day. My ISP states 200+ Mbs, but that's not guaranteed given the user base. I am on a cable (coax) ISP. 2.4 GHZ is less than 100 Mbs, usually ~60 MBS, per SpeedTest.

I haven't had any problems with drops or restarting the wifi. There are 5 of us in the house, streaming all sorts of Netflix, Hulu, Playstation, etc and everything is working fine.

How is your setup configured?

I've now had zero issues for 2-3 days.

I have done 3 things:

  1. Disabled 5GHz. Did not fix it.
  2. Installed kmod-ath10k-ct-smallbuffers. Did not fix it.
  3. Disabled WAN6 (IPv6). This seems to have been what fixed it! I realize disabling it is not exactly a solution, and the real solution would have been to get it running properly without issue, but this certainly seems to have been the cause. You can see in my log, I have this quite frequently: "Failed to send DHCPV6 message to ff02::1:2 (Permission denied)"

Glad to see! How is your performance doing speed wise?

Everything works and feels fast on all devices, but I'm probably not going to do any actual benchmarks

The only thing I've found to have an issue with is playing certain videos from plex to my iphone XR at native resolution. Video in question is 1920x1080 50fps, total bit rate of 6248kbps, and file sizes are often over 5GB. Have to reduce quality in Plex app to get it to work. I should test this on my Roku wireless to see if the issue persists there, or maybe it's just a limitation of plex server or iphone, rather than anything router related.

I have an Netgate SG-1100 Connected to my cable modem, from there I have 2 tp-link c2600’s as access points. I also have a couple of Zyxel PLA6456 Powerline adapters since I have an older house not wired for Ethernet. They work very well and I get 400-700 MB’s from point to point.

Could you share more info on what you did? Did you follow the steps by @farr4744, or something else? (Go to "Network", "Interfaces", then "Edit" your lan interface. Under the "DHCP server" tab, click the "IPV6" tab and disable for top 3 items.)

Just went to Network > Interfaces and hit Delete on WAN6

Well, I spoke to soon. Had another 2.4GHz drop last night, and again today just now. Wired not impacted. Anything in this log stand out?

Is this from my kernel log related?

[ 31.223496] br-lan: port 2(wlan1) entered blocking state

Yeah, I deleted WAN6 and the problem just continued, although I notice that there still seems to be IPV6 DHCP leases being given out.

I looked at memory usage and it was only at 33%, so the theory I saw about 5G causing a memory leak don't seem to apply here.

I looked at my kernel logs before the hangup and I see:

Any ideas what I could try?

Did you disable IPV6 on your lan network, per my previous post?
