All Broadcom... You should check if the wireless has any chance of being supported at all. Often not the case.

Would flashing firmware from a 68U or 87U brick the 86U router?

The chances for that would be close to 100% (different SOCs, different flash sizes, different RAM sizes, different WLAN chipsets).

i think it's the time to consider this device again. it just like a combination of GT-AC5300 and R8000P (openwrt already supported them), that should make it easier to port. and from wikidevi . it is using BCM4366E + BCM4365E, which are both supported by brcmfmac. 2.4g and 5g should just works (not like archer c2300)

Even if it does, it'll be crippled

If you want to see it supported, you will have to do the porting - I doubt anyone else will share your enthusiasm and do the development for you. There are much better devices, especially with OpenWrt in mind, for less money - and Broadcom remains what it is.
