If you set the encryption to wpa2 psk instead ( the working setup) and compare the system log, what is the difference?
I remember when I tried out wpa3/sae, my hostapd came up. Due to space issues I cannot try this out right now.

OK, I reconfigure again to WPA2-PSA - and here is my system log:

If helpful, this is the log compare without time stamp.
Right side is changing from WPA2 to WPA3 and left side is starting WPA2 again.
My working status at the moment:
MediaTek MT76x2E 802.11bgnac
SSID: AP-Home | Mode: Client
BSSID: 74:DA:ed:im:ax:00 | Encryption: WPA3 SAE (CCMP)
MediaTek MT7620 802.11bgn
SSID: AP-Guest | Mode: Master
BSSID: 74:DA:ed:im:ax:01 | Encryption: WPA2 PSK (CCMP)
Maybe WPA3-SAE is not supported on my router 802.11bgn ?!?
NowI am confused - your ap-guest network is alwaya wpa2 psk, and the network where your ap is client in is wpa3 sae on the right side compared to wpa2 psk on the left side ?
And master and client both are on the same radio ? And therefore it must be set to auto-channel ?
My Edimax router supports two radios = in my case I using radio0 for Client and radio1 for Master (AP-Guest).
The log campare applies only to "SSID: AP-Guest | Mode: Master" if ecncryption changed from WPA2 to WPA3 (right side) and back to WPA2 (left side).
The status above shows only the woking condition with two used radios.
I set always auto-channel if configuring Client-Mode (in my case for radio0).
My test with WPA3 is done with Master-Mode (radio1) so I sellected the desired free channel.
So in both tests radio0 worked in client mode with wpa3 ?
YES
Maybe WPA3-SAE is not supported on "MediaTek MT7620 802.11bgn" ?!? (radio1)
Have you tried wpa2 psk with 802.11w enabled ? Does that work ? mt76 is listed in that description. I would have assumed that also relates to Mt 7620.
OK good idea - I tested it out.... and it failed "Wireless is not associated"

I would rate this a bug: you use the kmod-mt76... packages as listed there, and 802.11w does not work.
On my system 802.11w does not work correctly with wpa2 enterprise. So 802.11w seems to still have potential for improvement.
Thanks Stefan for your support
I thought something like that already...
Meanwhile I tested also with "radio0" and Master-Mode:
MediaTek MT76x2E 802.11bgnac
Channel: 36 (5.180 GHz) | Bitrate: 585 Mbit/s
SSID: AP-Guest | Mode: Master
BSSID: 74:DA:ed:im:ax:00 | Encryption: WPA3 SAE (CCMP)
working fine with 802.11w (required) enabled
So the bug only affects the "MediaTek MT7620 802.11bgn" chipset
This may not be a bug, but a function that is not yet implemented.
Try a snapshot build to see if it has been changed.
Hi I am very new to openWRT I had same issue in Archer C60 with 5Gz but turning off 802.11r fast transition from 5GHz solved my problem.
I had this happen with v21.02.0-rc1 and it was awkward to get the wifi working again. Why it even dropped, a couple of hours after an apparently successful install, I am not sure. The key to the fix was to Remove the SSID section and then Add a new SSID for the radio channel. You can set up a new SSID and password, just on general security grounds, or duplicate the old settings so your existing hardware doesn't need new settings.
I have a wifi repeater, and the Scan option was picking it up. so I knew the hardware was working. I have backed out of 21.02 for now, but it is possible that this is semi-expected behaviour.
I am also encountering this issue on my ZyXEL NBG6817 (Armor Z2) after upgrading to 21.02.0 (the recent stable release), in my case this is happening for my 5ghz network. I have similarly tried removing the 5Ghz wireless network and remaking it, but still having this issue.
As recommended above, I retried the country code settings, and added a distance optimization setting (advanced settings for wireless settings in luci), and that seemed to take this time. 5Ghz is back, woot!
