Wireless Bridge with ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200 Wifi 6 and D-Link DAP-X1860 AX1800

I searched the database for a new Wifi 6 AX router with wireless bridges in 2.4 net.

Do you think this could work as wireless bridge:

ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200 Wifi 6 (master)

and D-Link DAP-X1860 AX1800 (client)?

Yes, should work using https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/atheroswds.

Wired ethernet or at least the 5 GHz band for the backhaul would be preferable though.

Thats good news.

My search was, that the D-Link DAP-X1860 is the only Wifi 6 extender which is supported bei openwrt. Right?

https://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_16128?dataflt[Device+Type*~]=Range&dataflt[WLAN+2.4GHz*~]=Ax

And it is supported by the current release?

So you have to choose the router according to the extender.

https://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_16128?dataflt[Device+Type*~]=Router&dataflt[WLAN+2.4GHz*~]=Ax&dataflt[WLAN+Hardware*~]=MT

Limited by the local availability there is
ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200
which is supported by the latest release

and there is the cheaper
TP-Link AX23
which is supported by snapshot only, which is a disadvantage for me

Which one is better, at least the ASUS TUF AX4200 is more expensive.

Any ideas when the TP-Link AX23 gets stable?

I need wireless bridges with 1 device, but some need 2-3 devices, so I have to use as client the AX4200 or the AX23, if the AX23 can work as wireless bridge client.

Which one would you recommed as wireless bridge client with more than 1 device?

'Any' OpenWrt supported wifi router/ AP/ extender/ mesh satellite can be used for this purpose (at least all atk9k/ath10k/ath11k or mt76 based ones). Extender is just a marketing term, mostly referring to the physical form factor.

I need small ones which are plugged into the power outlet like the mentioned D-Link DAP-X1860 AX and then I need router mainly which work as a switch.

I am confused now by things like EasyMesh (D-Link) and AiMesh (Asus). Does this have any impact on OpenWRT?

My problem is, that I have to test before installing openwrt if it works generally.

At the moment I have atheros-based routers as bridge master and bridge client without Wifi6 / AX. Can I use them as wireless bridge client with the mtk-Asus TUF AX4200? Of course with the old routers Wifi 6 is not supported.

I have Netgear R7800 and similar Zyxel NBG6817, some T-Link C7 v5, all running openwrt. I always read years ago, that there are problems with wireless bridges and mediatek.

Yes.

mt7915 and up should be fine (probably already mt7615).

A mixture between buzzword bingo and proprietary methods, not compatible with OpenWrt.

The DAP-X1860 is nice, especially in the 15-20 EUR price bracket, and works well.

Thanks for the info,so if I want Mesh, what must a router support?

https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/mesh/start talks about 802.11s. I didn't find any router which supports 802.11s and openwrt and even without openwrt it is very limited. On the other hand I have no idea what are in a few words the advantages of 802.11s.

My question is can I find better devices for Mesh with Wifi 6, than Asus TUF AX4200, Asus RT-AX53U and D-Link DAP-X1860?
