Wifi6 detection/settings in OpenWrt

Just got my first wifi6-capable device compatible with OpenWrt: the GL.Inet MT3000. I'm struggling to understand the wifi setup on it tho.

According to Wiki, for the wifi6-devices, the band should be set to 6g: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/basic, however the default settings in OpenWrt are band=5g, htmode=HE80.

How do I enable/force the wifi6/802.11ax only on this radio?

Also, as a part of the uci-defaults for the custom build I'd set different SSIDs for different bands. I'd just check the band setting in the device to set the proper SSID for the interface. But as I've discovered with the MT3000, even if the radio is 6g-capable, the default OpenWrt setting for band is still 5g. What can I use in the uci-defaults script to check if the radio supports 6g and set the SSID accordingly?

Thanks!

I can't really check that here, but please check that iw reg get reports the correct settings.

I feel that you might be mixing wifi6 = 802.11ax and 6 Ghz frequency band capability (6g band), which have no mandatory connection.

Indeed, neither the vendor specifications nor the OpenWrt commit suggest this device to be 6 GHz (wifi6e) capable, very few device do (and those tend to be rather large, expensive and not supported by OpenWrt yet (apart from only two ones known, Acer Predator W6 and the Telenor branded ZyXEL ex5700; there should also be a few very high-end ipq807x devices that might be supportable)).

Yes, as @hnyman suggests, you may well be confusing wifi6 (5GHz ax) with wifi6e (6GHz ax). However....

I am currently testing the new version of mesh11sd and have found that indeed these do seem to support 6GHz operation (or at least try to). I will qualify this in that I do not have any user devices I can try a 6GHz connection with.

Instead I have been trying to use 2 or 3 MT3000s talking to each other on a mesh, but we can go into the "potential bugs" in OpenWrt wifi6 handling that seem to be present later.

Going back to your question, it is the htmode setting that determines the mode.
The HE80 setting puts the radio into ax mode (also compatible with ac devices)
So by default you will get 80 MHz bandwidth ax on channel 36 (actually centred on channel 42).

The output of iwinfo will show:

phy1-ap0 ESSID: "OpenWrt-85ea"
          Access Point: 94:83:C4:36:85:E9
Mode: Master Channel: 36 (5.180 GHz) HT Mode: HE80
          Center Channel 1: 42 2: unknown
          Tx-Power: 23 dBm Link Quality: unknown/70
          Signal: unknown Noise: -92 dBm
          Bit Rate: unknown
          Encryption: none
          Type: nl80211 HW Mode(s): 802.11ac/ax/n
          Hardware: embedded [MediaTek MT7981]
          TX power offset: none
          Frequency offset: none
Supports VAPs: yes PHY name: phy1

Now, if I set band to 6g, channel to 87 (with a DFS-ETSI or DFS-FCC country code), I get:

phy1-ap0 ESSID: "OpenWrt"
          Access Point: 94:83:C4:36:85:E9
Mode: Master Channel: 87 (6.385 GHz) HT Mode: NOHT
Center Channel 1: unknown 2: unknown
          Tx-Power: 23 dBm Link Quality: unknown/70
          Signal: unknown Noise: -92 dBm
          Bit Rate: unknown
          Encryption: none
          Type: nl80211 HW Mode(s): 802.11ac/ax/n
          Hardware: embedded [MediaTek MT7981]
          TX power offset: none
          Frequency offset: none
Supports VAPs: yes PHY name: phy1

Note the "Channel: 87 (6.385 GHz)" part.
Channel 87, with band 6g is the best choice as it should work for most countries (but not apparently for DFS-Unset - code 00)

You can see the channel allocations here:

However if I try to configure a mesh interface it defaults back to ch36-5g, so I cannot test 6g working as I do not have a suitable user device.
(I tracked down the "mesh on ax" problem as the fact that the iw utility does not (yet) support ax)

This is the output:

# iw reg get

You're right, I was under impression that the band setting is used to control the mode, however after revisiting the wiki it explicitly says htmode is used for that.

Thanks for confirming, it wasn't clear to me from the wiki on a first check.

iw listshould tell you exactly which channels are (deemed) available, both based on the physical hardware and the regulatory settings.

It seems the iw utility does not yet support anything ax related, either wifi6 or wifi6e.
It returns some information if the driver supports it, but certainly cannot set anything - which is why it is not possible to create a mesh interface on ax - it defaults back to ac.

Yes and no, it should display any 6 GHz channels though - if supported by the hardware and/ or enabled for the configured regdomain (the following is from mt7921 (2.4+5 GHz) and mt7921au (2.4+5+6 GHz):

			* 5865 MHz [173] (disabled)
			* 5885 MHz [177] (disabled)

So which one is correct?

Good question…
…in general I'd be inclined to believe iw (at least if you check all reported bands).

It never hurts to cross-check externally, scanning from a wifi6e capable client.

Maybe, but it is not possible to create an ax (HE) interface using iw, so something is wrong/missing .....

If only I had one

Intel AX210, BE200 or Mediatek mt7921k (AMD RZ608), mt7922 (AMD RZ616) M.2 wlan cards are relatively cheap[0], adapters for desktop PCIe (or mini-PCIe) exist; for USB mt7921au is another option. Neither of these are great for AP mode, but they are decent clients (Intel BE200 is rather temperamental, and obviously no Intel card supports AP mode on 5- or 6 GHz).

[0] with antennas and desktop PCIe riser, you're looking at 18-25 EUR delivered, just the naked M.2 card is around half of that.

I'll try scanning from a second mt3000....
