Which is more up-to-date: the firmware selector or the wiki?

I am planning to buy an OpenWrt compatible device.

Checking the wiki, some models (e.g. tp link xdr 6088) only has snapshot support. However, in the firmware selector I am able to select 23.05.2 for this model. This also happens with Asus RT-AX54 and Xiaomi AX9000.

My questuon: which site is more up-to-date?

in best of worlds, they should be the same, but the wiki doesn't link to the snapshot images once there's a stable version available for the device.

this is however only true on paper, since the wiki link switch from snapshot to stable is manual.

the firmware selector will show you both.

in the case of ipq807x it get even trickier, since the target is switching name to qualcommax - stable releases are built with the old name, snapshots with the new.

I see. Another question: if the firmware selector shows a stable version for my model, then I can be sure that I can install the stable version on it, right?

Also, where can I find installation guide for my model if I can't find it in the wiki? In the forum, perhaps?

Generally,

  • wiki is manually updated and possible outdated, while
  • firmware selector shows what is currently built by the buildbot and is actually available/downloadable.

no, no one's manually testing the 1k+ supported devices with every new release.
and since a new kernel is used with every release, there might be new, undiscovered bugs.

depends on the model, but if you google, "techdata openwrt [devicename]" you usually end up on a wiki page with the git search link at the bottom, use that to find the commit in which the device was added, it usually contains the instruction on how to install openwrt.

Thanks, I found the installation guide of the xdr-6088 in the git commit.

Since that commit is on April 2023 and the latest stable version of OpenWrt (23.05.2) was released on November 2023, can I say with high confidence that xdr-6088 is supported by the stable release?

supported yes, installable, probably

it's not a very common device here, but I haven't seen any reports of installs failing.

That's why I encourage people to add their successes, issues and failures to each release post (OpenWrt 23.05.2 - Service Release). Search that thread for your device, see if anyone else has experience with it... Once you've done your install, make sure to post there!
