Greetings,
I've successfully set up a dumb AP, but remain confused about the documentation about it.
In reference to
https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wifi/wifiextenders/bridgedap
What is the difference between following the instructions under the heading " Wi-Fi Extender/Repeater with Bridged AP over Ethernet" and " Wireless Access Point - Dumb Access Point"? Are there examples scenarios in which one is preferable over the other?
Both seem to create a bridge interface, attach a wireless network to it, and disable dnsmasq. The additional commands under " Wireless Access Point - Dumb Access Point" disable dhcp6 and firewall functionality; but I'm failing to see how the firewall affects the configs.
My search of the forums didn't yield any insight.
Thank you for your time
If you set a static ip on the device you can perform maintenance. There are some things you have to change around to make it work. Dumb access disables all that.
Yes, but you can also perform maintenance if the device gets its address via DHCP. As long as there is an address, it's fine. The risk of relying on DHCP is that if the DHCP server is down, your AP may not have an address and thus you won't be able to reach it in that context.
Not sure what you're talking about here.
No, this is entirely incorrect.
"Dumb" vs "Bridged" AP is simply a change in terminology to better reflect what is happening at a network level in the name. There is absolutely no difference in how the device would be configured... it's just a name change.

No wrong answers,in ones own home lab you can miss out on some extra Openwrt goodies put in automatic. Better in static, homelab.
Good in automatic as well, then you have to search around for it after reboots and gets lost some times.Or you can bring it to other places and plug in where ever needed. Unless setting in the main for a static it works.
It is unfortunate that with the wifi chips takes long to be able to get them to work. Have great hardware and have to settle for proprietary solutions to have a decent wifi solution(dumb ap). What i'm saying, make it the way "you" want, how you want, little more control won't hurt. There are other ways. No wrong answer, Then there always other factors.
I think melangston just wants to continue his network access with wifi using another openwrt DEV, there's a few settings to change to let his main handle the dhcp, you can do it both ways , just another setting if putting a static on it.That dev could have some abilities lost out making that wrong turn at albiqurgue. No GPS
I have no idea what you're talking about here...
Yes, there are many ways one can configure their devices, but the OP's question was the difference between a "bridged AP over ethernet" and a "dumb AP.
Tthe answer is very simple -- no difference except for the name. Absolutely no config differences.
