Am I to assume that if i want a decent programmable router for it, i'm going to have to build one. Right?
Fiber can be slow, and we're no mind readers, what's the speed ?
i'm afraid i don't know yet. we've just been told they are installing it.
but i'd wager or at least hope it's faster than the vdsl i have already.
then I'd probably wait until you know.
It's probably 1 Gbit/s or slower. If you're lucky, it may be up to 10 Gbit/s.
There's plenty of cheap routers that can do well over 1 Gbit/s these days.
But yeah, I'd wait until they actually install the thing and have an offer.
Knowing the country and ISP will probably help us get an idea of the speeds an equipment you can expect.
UK vodafone isp
I wonder if a small unknown ISP in a totally random country would maybe have a website
The UK’s largest full fibre provider with speeds of up to 910 Mbps**. Stream, game, and work without limits.
Yep, sounds like gigabit (but conservatively marketed).
then the speed question has been answered. does that mean we can now asnwer my origional question?
Oh yeah. Like I said, many routers can handle gigabit routing. Especially those with working hardware flow offloading. My current router (GL.iNet Flint 2) would be overkill, my previous router (Totolink X5000R) would be totally adequate. Those are just two examples, there are many. Look at what is available locally and affordable for you.
Also, do you need fast wifi? Do you need many ports? Run a VPN endpoint or any other additional software? Do you want 2.5gbe ports for your local network? Maybe a usb3 port for attached storage? Anything else? Or none of those things?
Also have you looked at the list(s) at https://openwrt.org/toh/start yet?
do i need fast wifi? well my laptop doesn't have ethernet. so i guess reasonable. i don't do streaming on it but my big machine when i use it is more than capable but that has ethernet. to be honest, the wifi speed i have now would be adequette. however one option may be to disable routing on my isp router so it's just a modem and plug a hi speed wifi router into it. i have a couple but then there's the bottleneck of sending all traffic down a single ethernet port to a sepate router. as for many ports. i assume you mean hardware ports rather in ip ports. i have a couple of gigiabit switches kicking around. but i am looking for an option that doesn't require much power. over here power consumption costs are absurd these days.
as for vpn. on occasion when i need external access to my cloud. i could use a pi for that but i think their ethernet is only 100 base. not sure about the rpi 4 or 5 though, however i beleive banana pi have faster ethernet. i don't care about usb 3 ports as i have a couple of nas drives. the end goal is something low power, that can handle fiber, but that i have a hell of a lot more control over than the router supplied by my isp.
Ah but has it?
Are you paying the premium for 910Mb/s or are you getting a free upgrade?
The free upgrade will usually be 100Mb/s.
You had better ask Vody....
free upgrade.
It's still an improvement on what i'm getting now. I would assume it still used the ppp connection method my old one uses.
Unlikely.
It is more likely a router with a built in (or maybe separate) optical network terminal (aka ONT). These usually provide some lan ethernet ports and a wireless radio aimed at being a full "home" package.
Again, You should ask Vody
well that's useful. so it might be just a crossoever inteface like we used to connecto to the modem interfaces. nice.
It is just my guess....
My advice would be to not buy anything until you get the new installation, then see what Vody have provided and make any decisions then.
i won't. i was just inquiring. if it's as you say then i have a few routers that will do the job and i think i can openwrt them.
