WDS, mesh, batman, 802.11s, etc

Hi, I have 2 Atheros based OpenWRT devices: Linksys EA8500 and TP-LINK WR1043ND. The Linksys is my main device, it is connected to a cable modem. I tried using a wifi dongle on my PC, but the performance is terrible. Youtube keeps on buffering. So as a quick experiment I set up the Linksys as Access point (WDS) and the TP-LINK as Client (WDS). The PC is connected to the TP-LINK via a network cable.

This setup works, but I am not sure this is the best current practice. I have close to zero understanding of this topic. This seems to be the area of rapid changes, with names such as batman or 802.11s being mentioned in various blogs.

Please could someone give me some pointers. Thank you.

Bumping this topic up.

If it works and you are happy, I don't see the reason to go into more complicated solutions for such a simple setup.
