Watchguard T70 HW discovery

Another cheap x86 wired only router from ebay that I recently bought. Specs:

  • Celeron N3160 4 core CPU
  • 2 GB soldered on RAM
  • 16 GB msata boot drive
  • 8 GB ethernet ports: 3 work out of the box, 5 port switch needs a hardware mod to get it to work
  • 2 USB ports
  • spare internal sata + power port although there is no drive bracket / supports
  • fanless so completely silent

OpenWrt installation is straightforward: just write the OpenWrt image to the msata drive. I did this on a different machine, not sure if it could be done on the router itself.

The main issue with the device is that the 5 port switch does not work out of the box. This post on the netgate forum explains why.

The easiest solution is to remove the heatsink from the switch chip such that there is access to the row of resistors. Carefully removing R607 with a soldering iron does make the switch work as a 'dumb' switch on eth3. This does have security implications that traffic can't be separated but does not really matter to my use case. More info about this can be found in the netgate forum post linked above.

Mmm, maybe that MDIO bus code isn't in OpenWRT:

I had thought it was form the Velocloud sources but it looks like it was custom and not upstreamed.

As far as I understand from the post on the netgate forum a custom driver / code is needed to get the switch to work. That is way above my skill level but removing a small resistor is no problem :slight_smile:

In FreeBSD it does. I was hoping OpenWRT might already contain some way to access it but it looks like it doesn't. At least not via the igb mii interface. There are devices running Linux that are configured like this though. The Watchguard OS itself is that.
The T70 does have that set of dip switches that appear to be for moving the switch config interface though.
