WANTED: Testers for kirkwood, omap and tegra targets on Linux 5.15

Would resummoning a Pogoplug V4 (kirkwood) be of help? Alike Sheevaplug. Could probably try within a week.

Is OpenWRT going to use Kernel 6 in the future?

In the future, sure (as in v6.1), but not for 23.xy.z.

yes, after doing the release

I have mounted an usb drive and a SD card and both work fine. Installed luci and a few other packages and that works without issues as well. No errors in dmesg so 5.15 seems to work OK on the sheevaplug / kirkwood.

For what it's worth, I'm in the process of adding a new Kirkwood target and can confirm that the 5.15 kernel is running with similar performance and compatibility to the 5.10 kernel.

I've pulled the April 9 snapshot for kirkwood, it's 5.15 kernel. Installed on EA3500 and running similar to openwrt v21.

Willing tester, but wanted to clear up something about this upgrade.

Running (kirkwood) on e4200-v2 and ea4500-v1

Currently stuck on 21.02.5 r16688-fa9a932fdb due to a bug

a0bae2f

Willing to test on spare device ,
And just wanted to clarify the situation of sysupgrading or factory to 23.X .

Last time i had issues with flashing 22.X from a primary active partition which ran 21.02.x
flashing just would not take. only when switching to secondary active was i able to flash
22.03.3 to primary .

And now for the main question which involves

Sun Apr 9 23:06:44 EDT 2023 upgrade: The device is supported, but this image is incompatible for sysupgrade based on the image version (1.1->2.0). Sun Apr 9 23:06:44 EDT 2023 upgrade: Partition design has changed compared to older versions (up to 21.02) due to kernel size restrictions. Upgrade via sysupgrade mechanism is not possible, so new installation via factory style image is required. Image check failed.

What would this do to keeping 21.X version on another partition?
Any foreseeable problems with later sysupgrades to that partition?

I guess real question is is there any issues to flashing to this new partition table and
keeping older version arround also . I use a spare device for testing before
implementing any new updates/configs on main device. So i need one partition to
have same version as as the other main devices (e4200/ea4500)

thanx

You have to flash the factory image. As far as i know this should be possible on either partition. You can keep 1 partition with the old layout if you like. Be aware if you restore settings from a backup then there is a setting somewhere that it still indicates that it's the old layout, so you have to change that manually.

Note having that multi boot addon can help show which version is where!

r22549-9cbc83726e on ea4500 (kirkwood)

minicom boot logs looked clean.

few hours of testing (ipv4 only lan/wan)

br-lan does not act as hub unlike in 22.3(so assume fixed)
wish it was fixed in 22.X also so i would not have to jump
over 22.x on these devices from 21.x to 23.x

ss should probably be available by default next to netstat. like ip is next to ifconfig.
And ss -lput ipv6 wildcards look like ipv4s , unlike netstats which you can tell apart.

initial opkg install of luci does not seem have https .

and i do not remeber luci-theme-openwrt bringing in 10 more
packages before , seem important to luci itself
like lua,luci-lib-ip,liblucihttp-lua,luci-lib-base,lububus-lua etc...
(seems like packages luci install should have brought in?)

iperf tests seem normal 312 Mbits each way lan-wan at 100% cpu load (long runs)

software based offloading seems to break networking (only icmps get trough)

some leakage of https(maybe others) packets to lan ports of active connections when
android client switches from radio0 to radio1. but ive seen that before when in similar
circumstances when a host is just unplugged with active connections .

usb mounts , and rsyslog seems to log to usb just fine.
wish there was a system /etc/cron.d/ for services like logrotate to plug their own files in to
instead of manually adding to roots crontab.

should rsyslog be a listening server in default config?

#vim
E1187: Failed to source defaults.vim
Press ENTER or type command to continue

radio0-1 seem to work like before
with usual bugs like a few old phones connect but arps wont go trough so no ip connection.

dnsmasq should probably be changed to listen on wildcard by default.
maybe disable on internet, but all other services are on wildcards which are then firewalled .
so why bother have it bind to separate interfaces if services like ssh and http listen on wildcard?
otherwise netstat and ss outputs are a mess.

uci config takeover of rsyslog and others (dnsmasq) , just wish there was a
clear way to just use a single non merged config (by choice).
Say an option to disable ucis involvement in a service.
Otherwise you have to 3 way check to see what settings came from where.
And in some cases it is much easier to manage non uci configs,
like say complex dnsmasq setup with its own dhcp-hosts addn-hosts files etc..

maybe look in to dhcp-hosts addn-hosts format files for statistics in luci even when
dnsmasq is not running ( on dumb aps i have to replicate those files in to a new format
uci or ethers files to get the names of clients based on macs when there is no
layer3 connectivity just a layer2 vlan)

disclaimer: my opinions only, should not be considered as criticism of any kind.

Thank you a lot for the elaborate test report!

That's a bit worrying and we should check what's going on there.... Most likely it will also affect other hardware/targets and not only kirkwood.

also i never liked it when, enabling vlan filtering the menu extended in luci.

should be enough room to fit all of that info,

and i think old build 19.x pre DSA did not have this problem

edit:

ps: software flow offloading was lan-wan breakage (think lan-lan,lan-device was ok)

PS: also if there is a need for some specific tests/retests please post , i will keep this extra device
with snapshot installed on extra partition.

ReadyNAS Duo v2
2x WD60EFRX
14TB and (uh) 8TB external SCSI disks on the USB3 ports
Running Samba, backup server.

I downloaded the imagebuilder snapshot 21 April, built the image for my system, sysupgraded it and went to town. I was in the midst of a md resync, which has continued after reboot.

I'll run the usual backups to the box, copy large files on the USB disks, and generally scowl at it for a day or so. Then I'll see if I have any more luck with the WD140EFGX in it than I have on 22.03.4 (which is to say, very little).

Thanks -
Dana

  • EA3500
  • throughput issues on 100/10 connection with packet loss.
  • not able to use sqm due to packet loss.
  • problem authenticating password over 2.4GHz.
  • upgraded from previous 22.03.2, no previous settings used manual config.

Editing My OP After a bit more investigating these issues the problem may have a been a problem with only IPv6, nothing to do with prefix length config just perhaps with my ISP.

I noticed this issue on 22.03.5 imagebuilder as well but only to find it to be a problem with my ISP as I didn't find packet loss or wan throughput on other test sites.

I can flash another snapshot image and run the EA3500 again to verify knowing what I know now.

Continuing daily use of ReadyNAS Duo v2 (kirkwood), upgrading md to Seagate ST12000VN0008 without issue.

I have a Check Point L-50 running OpenWRT 23.05.2.

This device was running OpenWRT since release 21 but I never got good iperf3 benchmarks at local cooper 1 Gbps connection.

I think that CPU not running at 1.2 Ghz. I saw something about a patch to overclock or ajust the frequency of this CPU. Someone successfull got this?

If anyone needs more information, just ask me..

It is not recommended to run iperf3 on the router since the cpu is often not powerful enough and will struggle. A better test is to run iperf3 on different wired computers to test throughput such that the router is just doing the routing. That way you should get better results more representative of the actual performance of the device.

I can do nvidia jetson and xavier nano, do you support both now, or just the jetson nano ?
