WANTED: Testers for kirkwood, omap and tegra targets on Linux 5.15

In preparation for the upcoming OpenWrt 23.04 release the development team is urgently looking for users willing to do testing on OpenWrt-supported hardware based on

  • Marvell Kirkwood
  • Texas Instruments OMAP
  • nVidia Tegra

Those targets have not yet received any feedback when running Linux 5.15.
If you have such hardware and want to help out, please try current development snapshots based on Linux 5.15 and provide feedback here or on Github:

Thank you!

That says the hardware you tested on is part of the mvebu target. The title for this topic says the devs are specifically seeking feedback for kirkwood, omap, and tegra targets. Click those links to see listings of what hardware falls under those targets.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my non-developer understanding is that OpenWrt targets and sub-targets are basically groupings of routers and boards that share common (or closely related) internal components, so that they can be developed and maintained more or less together, with devices of the same subtarget being the most similar to each other.

Thank you for testing, but this is Target Platform mvebu/cortexa9. the Marvell platform we need to be testing is Target Platform kirkwood/generic.

@daniel omap is not bumped? So latest development snapshots will not include 5.15 kernel version?

@daniel Octeon needs more thorough testing too, worth adding to the list?

I'm afraid octeon needs more than just testing, we kinda already know that...

I posted a link to this forum thread on the unofficial OpenWrt subreddit to try get more awareness, and requested that people submit their feedback to official channels like this forum thread or your GitHub issues.

Anyway, I got a reply from one person who has both omap and kirkwood, and asked what sort of feedback you developers want to see. I gave him a link to the OpenWrt Wiki pages about Reporting Bugs, the troubleshooting guides, Master snapshot vs stable releases, and the quick beginner guide for how to build OpenWrt from source (for omap, which still has 5.15 as non-default kernel). Is there anything else I should add?

Just installed a snapshot image on a Globalscale Sheevaplug. dmesg output below. Is there anything specific that needs to be tested or is this enough?

Thanks a lot for posting the bootlog on Sheevaplug. Please make sure Ethernet and USB 2.0 work fine, maybe mount a pendrive and share it via Samba, then see that works -- that's more or less what the device is made for

OK I'll try to set something up this evening and will let it run for a while. Both of these are in my box of 'spares' so normally don't get used much.

Good idea. it looks like this should be a good resource for how to do various kinds of performance and stability testing: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/perf_and_log/start

Successful boot on a Compulab TrimSlice which appears to be the only supported Tegra device.

Would resummoning a Pogoplug V4 (kirkwood) be of help? Alike Sheevaplug. Could probably try within a week.

Is OpenWRT going to use Kernel 6 in the future?

In the future, sure (as in v6.1), but not for 23.xy.z.

yes, after doing the release

I have mounted an usb drive and a SD card and both work fine. Installed luci and a few other packages and that works without issues as well. No errors in dmesg so 5.15 seems to work OK on the sheevaplug / kirkwood.
