VLAN Setup on GL-MT6000 questions (newbie)

Dear readers,

I know it has been convered multiple times, but I have problems setting up VLAN's on my Gl.Inet GL-MT6000. I am running the software from Gl.Inet, so please - if you can help me- keep this in mind. I am unable to flash different software because I am a noobie.

Before we start: I am running OpenWRT 21.02 on Kernel 5.4.238.

Can someone help me adding the following easy setup:

  • I have physical eth port 3 and 4 free, so I would like to configure them for VLAN traffic.

  • Devices connected to port 3 should receive IP address in the range 192.168.30.0/24 and devices connected to port 4 should receive IP address in the range 192.168.40.0/24.

  • I've read many manuals but somehow I don't get it: devices, interfaces, bridges... Can some give me step-by-step instructions for setting up the above?

Your help is appreciated I lot. Thank you in advance.

Best regards from Kay in The Netherlands.

The vendor firmware works differently that official OpenWrt, so if you want to keep the existing firmware, you need to ask on the GL-inet forums/support channels.

It's not hard. In fact, it's remarkably easy. You can flash official OpenWrt directly from the standard GL-Inet web UI. Instructions are in the device info page.

Grab the sysupgrade image from here.

Once you are running official OpenWrt, we can help you here with advice that will actually work.

Thank you for your quick reply and instructions. Once I've done this, can I still use the admin interface from Gl.Inet and if not, can I easily get the original software my router came with (GL.Inet fork) back?

Again, many thanks.

No.

The GL-Inet interface only applies to the GL-Inet firmware, but you'll still have a nice GUI with official OpenWrt.

Depends on what you need. Don't forget that GL-Inet bundles a whole bunch of things that are not necessary for all users.... OpenWrt minimizes the footprint but allows you to install what you need for your own purposes. So what software/packages do you need?

Thank you again for your clear answer. I will follow the steps this week when my wife doesn't need internet for work (in our office) and will come back to here once done. I don't really need specific software/packes yet, I guess.

Again thank you for your quick and clear response!

Video is for OpenWRT 21 so should apply for you but still applies to latest stable version too. I believe you can still access luci with GL firmware, just Google it.

I mentioned it earlier, but it is worth repeating... GL-Inet's fork works differently than the official OpenWrt versions, so any tutorial showing the methods using official OpenWrt may not work properly on vendor forks, or worse might even cause a soft-brick scenario. While it is possible such a tutorial would still apply, it's best to either ask on the vendor's support channels, or use official OpenWrt.

Hello all,

I bought a new router (the same one) in order to test with.
I followed the steps as describes but I seem to get an error in the OEM interface (file isn't supported) and also if I do the upgrade via the Luci interface (XHR request time out). I use the sysupgrade mentioned earlier.

Might this have to do with the new firmware update from Gl.Inet? It is currently 4.7.0?

Kind regards, Kenneth.

You need to ask on the GL-Inet support channels since you are using their firmware. The methods described on this thread (and in general on this forum) are for firmware obtained directly from OpenWrt.org (I.e. the official OpenWrt project).

I already fixed it. Obviously it is not recommended to flash over a wifi connection. I added connected via cable and it worked. I am now running OpenWRT.
What I meant in my previous message was that I thought that the error I received was maybe due to the recent firmware upgrade from Gl.Inet which doesn't makes sense thinking about it now.

So, for now:

Can you please help me to setup the vlans step-by-step? I already saw that video which was mentioned above, but I didn't get the steps. Even after viewing it multiple times. :frowning:

For now, I would like to keep it simple and work from there.

Many thanks again, PSherman.

You're not going to find anything better than that video; the configuration starts at about 14:00. If you can't follow these steps don't think anyone else can help you, I'm new to OpenWRT and basically copied his settings at first, but now they just make sense since I reset my router a few times for testing.

It is somewhat distracting when he switches to explaining terminology, but you just want the configuration steps.

Creating the VLANs is step one, then you need to setup firewall zone for those VLANs.

It is kind of dissapointing that it seems so "obvious" that my question is one of the most sought for topics. Anyway, the video isn't clear to me (although I have an IT background). In the mean time I found one that makes sense and made me "realise" how the setup is being done. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

PS. For people running into the same issue about VLAN's (and the several ways you can configure them, take a look at the video's below. It will give you a clear insight. Much better, imho, that the one mentioned above).
