This is my first time using OpenWRT, and I am working on setting up the most basic setup possible.
I have a Netgear CM500 router with updated firmware connecting successfully to my ISP (confirmed by connecting directly to the ethernet port)
I have a Linksys E8450 with OpenWRT freshly installed using default settings. The only change I've made since installation is to update the router's static IP to 192.168.2.1 in order to avoid any address conflicts.
After connecting the router's WAN port to the modem using a brand new ethernet cable, the router can't seem to connect to the modem at all - the WAN interface on the router's web interface shows no packets exchanged, and pinging the modem's default IP (192.168.100.1) fails immediately.
What are my next steps here?
100.1 is docsis standard fallback neteork when you change your MAC address, call provider and say you ate not able to connect new gaming router.
If on Cable/DOCSIS you replace the router, always power down the modem and then restart it after say 5 minutes. These modems will only accept a new router MAC in a short time window after booting. For good measure also restart the router so it will do the DHCP dance with the modem inside the shortish time window the modem will play ball...
Alternatively set the MAC of the WAN interface in OpenWrt to the MAC of the device you last successfully connected with... (but be aware using the same MAC inside the same L2 domain is not going to be a great idea... )
If you do not have a cable/docsis link, please ignore this.
Thank you moeller0! Timing the restarts together did the trick. I had been restarting both devices, but not at the same time.
