Using Openwrt inbetween?

Ok

Hello-new to the forums.

I am wondering if someone could help me with the configuration of my network.

First off- I am a noob at this sort of thing.

I have a small amount of linux experience and I did live with an openwrt BT Hub a couple of years ago.

That has now gone.

My current network consists of a Zyxel outdoor 5G ( sim )router, which is in ip passthough mode, and then this goes to a deco X20 mesh system, set up to accept 'dynamic ip' as the internet connection.

The output of the mesh system goes through a zyxel managed switch, which is VLAN capable.

This allows me to separate a feed to our guests- we have a holiday let next door, and I wanted to isolate the guest wifi feed from our network.

Our speeds are between 250-300mb/s.

There is only one problem so far.

Latency wanders a lot- between 30ms to 100ms.

Buffer bloat tests vary from C+ to the occasional A.

I guess this is not too unusual for a mobile broadband feed.

There is a lot going on in the house, with our kid playing computer games, on youtube 12hrs a day, and with us watching netflix etc.

Then at the weekends we have up to 10 people as guests in the holiday let.

So, I did a bit of research, and found that openwrt with Cake SQM ''might'' help a bit.

I have bought a second hand Intel NUC ( with CPU powerful enough for single thread SQM ), and also a realtek 8135 usb 3 ethernet adapter.

I am hoping I can place this ( with openwrt installed )between the 5G outdoor Modem/Router, and the Deco mesh system.

All I want the Openwrt router for is to apply SQM and for traffic analysis on the data coming and going between the outdoor modem and the Deco mesh system.

All DHCP, NAT and routing/Wifi to be done by the mesh system.

I am hoping that is possible??

Very grateful for any help- please assume I am a 10 year old child

Riccy

That is idle latency or 30ms idle latency grows to 100ms under load?

Please detail

If your NUC has open pcie slot buy a 2 or 4 port ethernet card, of the server room surplus kind

Multi core SQM just got released, you can probably use something with less CPU power than a NUC.

If you are on 5G connection your bandwidth will vary and normal sqm may not help much. Have a look in this thread for a special cake setup for variable connections such as 4G and 5G:

Thanks very much for the replies - much appreciated.

Idle latency varies between 25 and 55ms

Download latency varies between 75 and 150.

Upload latency varies between 40 and 75

Unit is an Intel NUC D34010WYKH i3-4010U 1.7GHz 4GB RAM 120GB SSD Only one ethernet port, not sure about expansion possibilities.

many thanks

Not very expandable

For single netcard you need an extenal switch that can split 2 vlans otherwise.
