Upgrading Turris Omnia 2020 Edition to WiFi 6 with OpenWRT Compatibility

Dear OpenWRT Hardware Community,

I'm thrilled to share my journey and seek advice on upgrading my Turris Omnia 2020 Edition router to WiFi 6 while maintaining compatibility with OpenWRT.

Currently, my Turris Omnia boasts the original miniPCIE wireless adapter cards: Compex WLE900VX (based on Qualcomm Atheros QCA988x) for 5GHz AC WiFi and Compex WLE200N2 (Qualcomm Atheros AR9287) for 2.4 GHz WiFi. Now, I'm eyeing the official upgrade kit from Turris, which includes the AW7915-NP1 based on Mediatek MT7915AN for 5GHz WiFi 6.

Here's where I seek clarity: Can I still run a vanilla OpenWRT build on this upgraded Turris router using the custom firmware builder from OpenWRT?

My understanding is that the 5GHz AC WiFi relies on the kmod-ath10k kernel driver and the ath10k-firmware-qca988x package. Would removing these packages and replacing them with the kmod-mt76 kernel driver suffice for the transition to WiFi 6?

I'm eager to hear from the community about any experiences, tips, or insights on this upgrade path. Your guidance will be immensely valuable as I navigate this transition while ensuring compatibility with OpenWRT.

Thank you in advance for your expertise and support!

Best regards,

Jan Jasper de Kroon

It should be enough.
Haven't run vanilla on mine but I do have a mt7921 card with kmod-mt76 running just fine on turris os

Does it also need a firmware package next to the mt76 kernel module, like with the qca988x-firmware

root@turris:~# opkg list |grep mt76
