Troubleshooting Intermittent Connectivity with OpenWRT and Huawei 4G Setup on Bouygues Telecom

Hello everyone,

I'm facing an intermittent connectivity issue with my network setup where an OpenWRT router is connected to a Huawei 4G router provided by Bouygues Telecom. The Huawei router is intended as the WAN source, distributing internet to clients on the OpenWRT network. However, the connection is unstable, frequently dropping. Interestingly, every 10 seconds I can ping an external URL successfully for about 5-10 attempts before experiencing timeouts. At the same time, clients directly connected to the 4G router maintain a stable connection.

Details of the Setup:

  • Huawei 4G Router: Acts as the gateway and DHCP server for LAN clients.
  • OpenWRT Router: Configured with two network interfaces (WAN + WiFi-LAN bridge) to manage and distribute the internet.

When the OpenWRT is configured merely as a simple switch, pinging external sites works without any issue. However, when it's set to separate the network into different interfaces, the connection starts dropping.

I’ve tried this setup using different router models (RTU950 and WE826), but the problem persists with the same behavior.

Could this be due to ISP policies on connection sharing, or is there possibly a misconfiguration somewhere in my network setup? Insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated as I work to stabilize this connection.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help!
