TP-Link Deco M4R v1 dumb AP wifi backbone instead of lan cable?

Hi all,

I had a TP-Link Deco M4R v1 laying around and I was thinking of using it as an AP.
This works fine with a lan cable connected to my OpenWrt router.

But I like to use it without the lan cable. So for example using my wifi radio's for connecting to my existing wifi network and use the other radio for the clients wifi.

I can connect one of the radio's to my existing lan wifi network as client, but when I disconnect the lan cable it stops working. I added this connection to the lan firewall rule and the device has an fixed ip address. (like the lan interface) So I think I'm missing something somewhere.

Do I need to bridge something?

if you don't mind having two separate subnets, simply put the connection to the remote radio in the wan firewall zone.
