Tips for getting cheap used x86-based firewall with full Gbit NAT (a PC Engines APU) if you are in the US

HEllo,
i was thinking to run ESXi on my server - so isn't it better to just virtualize openwrt (as a router) as buying another hw ...

server running ESXi will run virtualized TrueNAS and bunch of other VMs.

thanks

the velocloud has 2 boot partitions, and I would like to try to see if I can install a clean openwrt on one of them. To see what works and what doesn't
Which image should I install from this list?

Ext4 combined should work just fine, but it'll overwrite the partition table.

If you want to keep it, you manually have to write the root FS and kernel, but then there's still the issue of the boot loader.

i used the combined+efi and now i think it is bricked...it is in a boot loop
i tried to follow this
so i run :

# Write image
dd if=openwrt-x86-64-generic-ext4-combined.img bs=1M of=/dev/sda

and i rebooted...

Well, if it boot loops, it's not bricked.

Try the efi version.

i'm already using the efi version.
This is the outpout i can see :

uart_check_keystrokes: error too many bytes are available

so it stop at : uart_check_keystrokes: error too many bytes are available

i can't stop the loop...

well, i started a new topic about this problem here

You overwrote the complete internal storage (SSD?), so your dual-boot and everything else from the OEM setup is gone (I hope you have full backups). Now you're 'doomed' to get OpenWrt (or anything else) working…

Anyone grabbed these ?

Seems they locked the repository :frowning:

you can try to contact the guy from the blog : https://modlog.net/velocloud-520-to-opensource/#comments
if he built the image, then he probably forked the repo ?

any idea / suggestion here? thanks

Yeah, it's off topic in this thread, create a new one.

just updated my APU2C4, flashed the latest CoreBoot v4.16.0.3, added an additional wifi module WLE900VX taken from my Velocloud 520... i really love this device :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: since the APUx exist why are they still stuck with the GX-412TC cpu ? There are plenty of more powerful cpu now...
Their latest innovation is a 1Gbps SFP port...

cheaper, and competent enough to do 1gbit routing ?

This is not compatible with the marketing.

Marketing: Persuading people to buy products they don't need with money they don't have, to impress neighbors who don't care!

It's up for interpretation, I guess.
You (obviously) don't need any better CPU for 1gbit routing, so that's spot on, unless something else was promised, where the GX-412TC underperforms.

For $20 (SW301DA, used) I really wouldn't complain...

The Cyberoam SCB-6901 could be an alternative to the SW302DA, using intel 211 NICs.
Only drawback are the USB2 ports, where as the 302 got USB3s.

Was $20 + S&H on ebay.com (I bought it), still cheapish on ebay.co.uk, if you're in EU, and don't mind the import fees.

Look for the CR25ing version (or CR25Wing, if you want wifi). There's also the CR15ing/CR15Wing and CR35ing.

fwiw, while I haven't tried myself but you can use mpd5 to get better PPPoE performance.

@frollic thanks but not sure if i understand all ... is it possible to simply answer if it can or cant handle 1gbit / stable etc... thanks
