What target/device and version?

I know @aparcar has been changing the ASU server (which is where much of the metadata comes from) to use a different change detection mechanism on the build server (pertinent commit listed below for the curious).

I see release snapshots (e.g., x86/64 in releases/23.05-SNAPSHOT) lagging behind because they haven't done a build for a while, but anything that's built in the past couple of days has been updated almost immediately (on Monday I saw the mediatek/mt7622 snapshot profile updated on the ASU server 13 minutes before the downloads server!).

Custom snapshot builder is still outdated, doesn't update anymore, still at 26593. @aparcar doesn't know where the problem is. :cry:

The snapshots that I monitor via a cron job (x86/64, mediatek/mt7622) have been updating fine since that above commit went into effect, so I'm curious what builds are behind.

The devices in question are both ath79/generic, more specifically WR1043N/ND v3 and WNDRMAC v2. I've tried both with https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org and with ASU (luci-app-attendedsysupgrade) and when you check first it says there's a new SNAPSHOT 26620 build available, so the latest at the moment, but when you actually request it (even after customizing the packages), it always gets back with build 26593, which is a few days old.

Ok, now I'm seeing that, too. Doing an x86/64 snapshot build, I get

Received incorrect version r26608-b2a84c86e3 (requested r26620-6b03050192)

Both the ASU server metadata and build server report that 26620 is the current, but the image builder on the ASU builder is stuck at 26608.

I suspect the build cache is out of sync, so ASU builder doesn't know to download the new image builder. I can see where the image is being used (https://github.com/openwrt/asu/blob/1fa82886fa28514d90b4beca209d99b05c3c7b80/asu/build.py#L62), but I can't see where the images are being flushed out in update.py...

This could be easily solved:
Klick on "Customize installed packages and/or first boot script"
Enter a unique text in the "Script to run on first boot (uci-defaults)" field that beginns with a "#" (means it's a comment only - I use actual build number)

Alas, that doesn't work for this one because its the actual podman imagebuilder cache (one layer above the build cache) that is broken. You can force new builds, but it keeps giving the same wrong imagebuilder.

... ohh ok - was on r26608 and created a working r26618 image tonight with that procedure.

Edit: or there is a device dependend additional problem ... :-/

Very interesting that you managed to get anything newer than 26593. I haven't been able to bump above 26593 for ath79/generic devices, whatever I tried (I have obviously customized the build script with various # 12345 type of comments to get fresh builds / i.e. bypass caching, but to no avail).

I suspect a timing issue with the builds and ASU server updates. The metadata on the ASU server is now being updated almost instantly as of the "janitor drop" commit I reference about 7-8 posts above, and I think the podman images are sucked in immediately, before the image builders are completely finished (this is wild speculation without any proof, but it fits the behavior).

FYI
... mhhh changing the kernel minor version makes it impossible to build a package (again) - seems not all package maintainers updated their dependencies.

Yes, also ath79/generic doesn't seem to be building since the bump to kernel 6.6 a couple of days ago https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/ath79/generic/ - it's stuck at 26620 (kernel 6.1).

Is there any chance that the bizarre build caching done by the Firmware Selector can be reined in a little? I just requested a new build and was served a snapshot from a full week ago.

This behaviour doesn't make any sense.

It's an Asus RT-ACHR17 (a.k.a. RT-AC42U).

I used a custom package list and got the same snapshot that I downloaded 7 days ago (June 20, r26721) instead of a current build (June 27, r26805).

Even if absolutely nothing else changed, I read that curl was updated in the June 21 snapshot and it's in my package list.

Under "Customize installed packages" in the " Script to run on first boot (uci-defaults)" field add a unique comment such as

# 1

then "Request build". Otherwise you'll get an old build from cache (kept in cache for about 1 week).

Thank you for this. I thought changing the package list was required to bypass the cache (which is super annoying), but just adding a script comment makes it much less onerous.

I still don't understand why the cache is longer than 1 day (i.e. 1 snapshot release). That defeats the intent of daily "snapshots".
