The mcproxy package was removed from version 24.10.0. Why?

Hello everyone,

why is the mcproxy package no longer available in version 24.10.0? Why was the package removed? It worked so well for me?

Who was responsible for this?

Greetings from Stefan Harbich

Typo ocmproxy?

I meant this proxy "mcproxy" for OpenWRT:
mcproxy

It does appear that mcproxy is no longer included in 24.10. To know why, though, you should probably reach out to the maintainer (you can see the name and email in the link you provided).

Why wasn't the fix applied?
igmpv3: fix handling of join message in include mode

OpenWrt is usually not in the business of fixing third-party applications for their developers, especially not by applying random out-of-tree fixes, especially not if there is no active development anymore.

I can understand security concerns. But there wasn't a security issue here, was there? The software ran without issues, across multiple major and minor releases.

Try compiling it yourself with the 24.10 build system -- that would be a good test to see if it still works or if it was removed because something broke.

An omcproxy package seems to exist and to be an alternative, and even comes with a LuCI interface.

The main point here is that the package no longer has a development path as @takimata points out. It doesn’t have a maintainer either.

Bandwidthd still works fine without issues when it was dropped for exactly the same reason from 23.05, but I still build it for my snapshot builds to this day. It works for my needs, and I suggest if you wish to continue using this package you are most certainly able to continue using it.

I used mcproxy because I manage multiple multicast streams (IPTV, Plex Media Center, etc.) in different VLANs. It just doesn't work reliably with IGMP, OMCPROXY, etc.

Regardless, it is no longer going to be built as an OpenWrt package unless you build it yourself.

Your options are limited. You can revert to latest Release version for which it was built (23.05), and will soon be EOL, source an alternate package that suits your needs, or patch the igmpv3 fix handling of join message in include mode if you want/need it, and build the package. https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-developer/toolchain/single.package#building_a_single_package

(Or, if you feel particularly cocky, you could try downloading and manually installing the 23.05 package on 24.10. Depending on how deep and particular its dependencies run, for a package that hasn't changed in eons it might just work. But I will deny ever having suggested that.)

Needless to say that if—and that's a big if—this works it can only ever be a band-aid fix to tide you over in the short term until you find an alternative or go down one of the routes @RuralRoots laid out.

I didn’t hear you say it. :speak_no_evil: :grinning:

Really great, omcproxy isn't working properly. mcproxy deleted. It's like in business again, when developers decide something independently...

When you contacted the developer, what did he tell you?

I'm still waiting for a reply.
