Splitting internet connection

So I have a fibre ont modem providing internet. I would like that internet to be provided to an openwrt x86 router and a ISP router(two networks) The openwrt router supplies virtually everything including other routers in ap mode. The ISP router has incredibly fast wifi that is advantageous for a few things but cannot be configured as ap mode.

Option 1
ont modem to unmanaged switch to openwrt and isp router. Unlikely to work properly.

Option 2
Ont modem to openwrt x86 machine. Use one port with disabled firewall and nat/DHCP to feed ISP router.

Option 3

Ont to openwrt to ISP router, no modifications. Would cause double nat issues.

I've read there may be other ways, but I hope you see what I'm trying to accomplish.

I'm a noob, can someone point out the path of least resistance? If the best way is use a port on openwrt what is the easiest way to configure this on Luci.

Correct, does your ISP allow option 1?

Option 3 would be the least difficult to configure, if any is needed at all. Obviously, the double NAT could be an issue - depending on your use case.

  • Why do you want your ISP device to remain in use?
  • Why do you want them isolated side-by-side or firewalled downstream?

Thanks for your reply!

Option 1

Not sure about ISP, but a switch mostly works with weird, short, occasional internet pauses.

Option 2

Is it possible to configure Lucy to not cause a double nat problem from one port to ISP router?

Option 3

The ISP router works well but feeds a gaming PC that is hard to service with wifi and I don't want nat issues for gaming.

As for why I don't want to retire ISP router that can't be configured is because it's wifi speeds are roughly double anything else I have. it's a 6e unit capable of 1.25 GB throughput which are still expensive, not to mention true 7, lol. Waiting for the price to drop.

Why two networks/firewall. Because the ISP router config is disabled by ISP and they are unwilling to even think of giving any suggestions/fixes. So I wouldn't have a choice if I keep the ISP router running that I know how to do.

Also I have a 2.5gb connection, they gave me a crazy discount for two years. The ISP router only had 1gb ports and I have a number of things that can handle 2.5gb. the openwrt machine was relatively cheap with 5 x 2.5gb ports and so many options. Hard to find similar router specs for a good price.
