Hey there,
we are traveling to Australia in two weeks and I am trying to build up a small router. My kids need internet 
I already followed all instructions, but I am not able to receive an ip address on the interface.
Somebody here with a clue what might me the problem?

wired, or wireless tethering ?
which instructions(s) were you following ?
Wired via USB.

It looks like its connected, but I am missing the ip and if I disconnect the wireless connection to the router, there is no internet on the OperWRT.
