EDIT:
problem solved, actually, after configuring both finnix and XP with DHCP
initially I was using manual configuration and not setting the default gateway
I hope this helps other troubled people too :))
This suggests that the issue is actually still an XP problem. Out of scope here, technically. If anyone on these forums remembers the details of XP, you might possibly get some help, but I suspect that this is not likely since XP is so incredibly old.
