Rt-n56: No reactivation of 5GHz except reboot

Hi
I'm with my rt-n56u on 17.01.4, r3560. When I disable 5Ghz wifi with Luci (or wifi down cmd) I cannot reactive it in Luci (or wifi up cmd). To be exact: According to Luci the interface is up, but I cant see the SSID with my mobiles. I have to reboot the router to get 5GHz back.
My wireless config:

config wifi-device 'radio0'
        option type 'mac80211'
        option hwmode '11g'
        option path 'pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0'
        option channel '3'
        option htmode 'HT40'
        option country 'DE'
        option txpower '20'
        #option noscan '1'

config wifi-iface
        option device 'radio0'
        option network 'lan'
        option mode 'ap'
        option ssid '2G'
        option encryption 'psk2'
        option key 'mykey1'

config wifi-device 'radio1'
        option type 'mac80211'
        option hwmode '11na'
        option path '10180000.wmac'
        #option htmode 'HT20'
        option channel 'auto'
        option country 'DE'
        option txpower '20'
        option noscan '1'
        option log_level '0'

config wifi-iface
        option device 'radio1'
        option network 'lan'
        option mode 'ap'
        option encryption 'psk2'
        option key 'mykey2'
        option ssid '5G'

Also curious: The 5G option htmode 'HT20' has to be commented out and the channel to be 'auto'. If try to define a fixed a channel 5GHz doesn't start (even after reboot) at all.
I know there are some other post here where problems w/ 5GHz are reported. This might be the next.

Do you see similar errors in the logs as described in N56u wifi problems ?

Not really, when disabling and reenabling 5GHz via Luci I get:

I do a network restart in startupskript.

A few suggested changes to your wireless config...

2.4 Ghz -

Use either channel 1, 6, or 11 (even in the EU).

Set channel width to HT20.

Transmit power can be set up to 25.

5 Ghz -

Take channel selection off auto and change the channel to one in the higher range that doesn't require DFS, In the US, I recommend starting at 153. Run iw list to see the non-DFS frequencies.

Set channel width to VHT80.

Transmit power can be set up to 30.

Both -

Set encryption to WPA2-PSK and AES.

I would also recommend Lizard Systems free WiFi Scanner to see what wireless traffic in your area looks like…

https://lizardsystems.com/wi-fi-scanner

If none of that helps, I would then suggest setting OpenWrt/LEDE to factory defaults, and re-configuring from scratch.

Thx @jwoods for your recommendations!

For the 5GHz settings unfortunatelly iw list tells me that only HT20/HT40 modes are available for that router. I tried VHT80. But the interface didn't start at all (even after reboot). Also I'm not sure that tx power of 30 is interpreted well. I saw a decreased sending power on my mobiles. Thus set it back to 20.

I newly set up that router - fresh from stock fw. So unfortunatelly I'm already from scratch.

The reactivation problem still exist. I always have to reboot when disabling wifi via Luci.

Are you running both 2.4 and 5 Ghz at the same time?

Yours is an 802.11n device so it's normal, VHT80 is an 802.11ac thing. 40 MHz (ie HT40) is the maximum 802.11n allows.

Yes.
I also saw in some posts that there could be sequencing problem (5GHz has to be on to switch 2.5GHz on or so). Played than with ordering of switching on/off for both frequencies. Result was always the same: 5GHz stayed off (means: ssid not visable by mobiles) -> reboot necessary.

I'm wondering if there are more commands than /etc/init.d/network restart or wifi [up/down] to swich wifi. How can I simulate at command line what's happening with wifi interface while booting? Obiously there should be more than that mentioned commands....

There are...

ifconfig wlanX down

ifconfig wlanX up

...replacing X with the wlan number you want to change.

Also with that cmds its not possible to bring 5Ghz back. I think there could be a general 5GHz bug in the 17.x version. At least this FS#1248 bug sounds quite similar to my problem.

Think there only 2 options: Wait until bug is fixed or go back to version 15.x

It's been a known issue for a while...

The ifconfig commands work well on my router, so it's not a general bug on 17.x

Same here with TP-Link Archer C60
