the reason I'm suspecting the hard drive is from personal experience of when I tried to use a 2.5ssd it threw my UE300 into some whacky CDROM mode...

maybe you should try raspiOS on the sdcard... i wanna rule out some whacky config.txt settings or something in my build...

or you could just comment out any lines near the base of config.txt... and remove pci=pcie_bus_perf or whatever it is in cmdline.txt ... etc. etc.

I believe so yes. I've looked on the raspberry pi forums and the customer reviews, and that is what I could find.

Would it help if I ran any command on other OS that I know supports this adapter?

All the above taken into account... It pretty ignorant of me to say this... but I don't really trust 'amazon basics' as a brand name... actually... I seem to recall another thread on this forum where someone else had issues with a similar branded adapter...

But as you say... if you've tested in pc's and whatnot, 'should be ok'... we'll test on raspiOS and see what comes up...

If it works on raspiOS on sdcard... it's going to be a PITA... but I think you'll also have to install raspiOS into your USB-DRIVE and also test with that... (but leave that till there is no other option)

I actually ran into more issues trying to use full size hard drives... bought some powered hubs... first one backpowered the pi and stopped it from powering on... that was like the third/fifth attempt...

I have used externally powered hard drive docks with no issues thought... (and many usb-sticks). Suppose that's an option too... to put the build on a smaller usb stick (though technically it's almost the same test as the sdcard test)

come to think of it... did you check dmesg for errors?

I tried booting piOS from an sdcard, the adapter is working fine.

you could try to make your own minimal official image (21.02.0) using asu.aparcar.org add luci and your ethernet driver and test on sdcard

if it works we can start adding packages and rebooting until we find the issue...

then from hard drive (if sdcard works)...

So the packages should be kmod-usb-net, kmod-usb-net-asix, kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179. I'll try without luci for now, just ssh directly.

sir my mwan3 doesn't works, i did same setting in other fw and work well.

Yup, this was for the older USB2 models, I'll remove this. Thanks. I'm trying out the USB Boot right now, and will try the dmesg command to see any errors.

Here's the dmesg output from raspberry pi os 32 bit lite when booting from usb and connected via the adapter for ssh

Here's the custom package list that I have used in the new openwrt build. This includes only kmod-usb-net and kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179 apart from the built-ins provided by SNAPSHOT.

Here's the dmesg output of the custom build on a formatted sdcard. I didn't compile lsusb in it, but that wouldn't matter much, as I can see the same problems again. I disconnected and reconnected the cable and attempted to record what's happening after I tried reconnecting. Here's the dmesg output, if it helps.

nevermind... that's you pulling it out...

this works... (or the dmesg is cut off... or the driver never fully initializes or something)

are they the same minimal build and you just reconnected the dongle?

  • do you have eth1 setup in luci > networking > interfaces ?

Yup, same minimal build, just added kmod-usb-net and kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179. Here's the list of packages I used.

you just reconnected the dongle?

Yes, just pulled it out, and back in.

do you have eth1 setup in luci > networking > interfaces ?

I didn't use luci in the past few steps. But when I did the first boot of your recent snapshot published 3 days ago, I tried changing it then. eth1 was greyed out in the interface section. I followed the exact same steps on my first try.

well.. you might need to rebuild yourself a custom image with luci too...

let me know if it works after you add wan/eth1...

Here's the updated dmesg. I changed the interface in br-lan to eth1 to see if it works or not.

It's ******* working now.

I'm at a loss of words right now. I'll try and include the uasp drivers (kmod-usb-storage and kmod-usb-storage-uas) on the custom build as well.

Thank you.

i do not want to fuel the discussion, but...

after upgrading to rpi-4_snapshot_3.5.7-6_r17443_extra
i also seem to randomly have the problem with usb-eth-adapter went missing. at least thats when i first noticed it.
pretty sure it wasnt happening before.

my logs were pretty identical to the last one posted above.

could be totally unrelated or pure coincidence.
but still weird. reboot or unplug/replug temporarly helps.
will provide logs if i catch it the next time.
considering the observations it happend twice since upgrade, so every 2 days or so...lets see.

fuel it... i value feedback

if you can try to capture a few dmesg sections when the issues occur... and any info surrounding that... it may assist...

(also let me know what NIC/driver)

afterwards... if you can use UPGRADEsFLAVOUR="release" ... or just upgrade to 21.02.0 and let me know if it still happens it would be good...

depending on the outcome i will probably promote 21.02.0 to stable... ( recommended for most )...

i'll also check any recent packages that have been added for conflicts... these are the only recent packages that were added that I can see may effect a nic... while I doubt these are the issue you can try uninstalling them to test

> mii-tool
> spi-tools
> kmod-spi-bcm2835

if 21.02.0 also has the issue... i'll do a build with older rpi-firmware... and/or try to dig up some older builds or something... wish I had the same hardware as you guys when these things pop up... too many variables make it challenging to debug...

it also is a ax88179-based one...

details later when i am home and the issue rearises or not (hopefully).

i switched from current to release...

is it sys-upgradable? to tell from the r# it is major downgrade or is this only because of the new 21.02 version? havent really looked at the official.
