Router recommendation for backup via openvpn

Hello there!

I would like to ask for router recommendation. To do that let me explain you the use case.

I'm setting up server for off-site backup and I want to pair it with a router that will connect to openvpn server on my current router (pfsense vm sorry guys :broken_heart:) and also will connect to the server via RS232. No, not computer connecting to router, router connecting to computer, in case of catastrophic failure, computer lacks IPMI so talking to serial at least allows me to fix grub or boot issues lol

So that's the plan now here are my requirements:

  1. Internet connection is gonna be:
    a) On-site internet connection has 60Mb/s upload, and since it will be sending backups thats the upper limit
    b) off-site will have 300Mb/s download, but it can't overcome the upload limit. It also has quite low upload in case i'll be downloading something.
  2. Wi-fi: entirely optional but like wifi 4 would be very nice addition
  3. Etherent: I need one wan one lan that's it
  4. USB: As I eluded to it before I will need one usb port, so that i can connect usb to rs232 converter so that i can ssh to the router and then use minicom to talk to the server (saves me 1h trip in case i need to change boot option). Ooooor alternatively router with rs232 but i think thats too rare
  5. How many clients? just the server and maaaybe like 1-2 clients on wifi rarely
  6. As I eluded to it before it will connect to my openvpn server so I would like it to be able to push entire 60Mb/s (i already don't have much throughput i rather use it all)
  7. Price: preferably 50-100 USD/EUR with 200 USD/EUR upper limit if necessary/better
  8. Also would be nice if it was easily flashable but if i have to get dirty and disassemble it and talk directly to serial, I can handle it.

I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this idea and your recommendations and hopefully I didn't do anything wrong by posting this. Thanks!

Mister_Magister,

Welcome to the forum.
Asking questions here is fine, if they are easy to follow.
Could you make a picture of your preferred configuration, as I see some things that are not clear (enough to me).

I presume you mean ROUTER in the following diagram?

on-site off-site
------- --------
openvpn-server
pfsense (60Mb/s) ---> (300Mb/s) ROUTER with eth AND serial to Backup-Server

My Q's are: Where are your mentioned (2-8) requirements (on- or off-site)?
Like Wifi(2), is that needed on- or off-site? If needed off-site, for who?

In my diagram above, you can ssh into ROUTER and use minicom to serial 'talk' to the Backup-Server. With OpenWrt you can use a usb to serial device to do this, you have to make your own build with the correct packages.

Only thing is, does the serial of the Backup-Server works when it is, for example, powered down?
How do you power up this Backup-Server in such case, as you write 'computer lacks IPMI'?
Better use IPMI on the Backup-Server as I do not see another way to power it up?

Sorry seems like I've been too verbose lol

I just need the offsite router, that handles internet and allows me to ssh to it and talk to the computer over serial

WoL or texting human that lives in the building (my parents)

Mister_Magister,

In that case any (cheap) router with OpenWrt, could do your job.
Although OpenWrt need additional packages that handles the USB serial device.
