RM520N-GL Data collection question

New forum member here. I'm running a GL-iNet slate AX 1800 router with an external RM520N-GL modem. I have been looking around for some code to install that will pull all the connection stats from the modem i.e. (band, signal strength, etc.). I realize that GL-iNet uses OpenWRT at the core level. I can access the root directory with SSH and install packages so.....

Any guidance on what to try or where to look would be appreciated. I do have a Home Assistance instance running with Graphana. I did see that some other have created some nice dash boards with modem stats.

This device is not supported by OpenWrt and the whole SOC likely never will be. Furthermore GL.Inet modifies their firmware considerably, please talk to them.

It appears you are using firmware that is not from the official OpenWrt project.

When using forks/offshoots/vendor-specific builds that are "based on OpenWrt", there may be many differences compared to the official versions (hosted by OpenWrt.org). Some of these customizations may fundamentally change the way that OpenWrt works. You might need help from people with specific/specialized knowledge about the firmware you are using, so it is possible that advice you get here may not be useful.

You may find that the best options are:

  1. Install an official version of OpenWrt, if your device is supported (see https://firmware-selector.openwrt.org).
  2. Ask for help from the maintainer(s) or user community of the specific firmware that you are using.
  3. Provide the source code for the firmware so that users on this forum can understand how your firmware works (OpenWrt forum users are volunteers, so somebody might look at the code if they have time and are interested in your issue).

If you believe that this specific issue is common to generic/official OpenWrt and/or the maintainers of your build have indicated as such, please feel free to clarify.

Ok....understood. Thanks for the feedback.

Does Flint 1 have USB port? I have Flint 2 and a M.2 to 2.5Gbps ETH board for my RM520N-GL and the Flint 2 can detect it as cellular source when I connect it via USB. You can manage the modem there but its only limited to APN and AT command settings. However, with AT commands, you can basically do anything with your modem through GL inet's GUI. In their documentation, the cellular interface offers more features like Tower locking but I think that it is only exclusive for their modem+router combo devices. They also offer an M.2 to USB dev kit which you can use as a sled for your RM520N to also use it as a cellular source for your Flint 1.

I still havent tried using luci-app-3ginfo-lite with a USB cell connection from my M.2 to ETH board but I do believe that it should work since its pretty common for routers to use USB interface for their modem modules. If it works then you can view the signal stats and bands from there. (USB interface kinda sucks with Openwrt tho and also make sure youre running AT+QMAPWAC=0 when using a M.2 to ETH or M.2 to USB board)
