[RFT] Main (kernel 6.1) builds on EAP235-Wall / EAP615-Wall / Archer C6U / Archer AX23

This is a call for testers. Seems kernel 6.1 introduces a regression on certain mt7621 devices (reports on EAP235-Wall, Archer C6U and Archer AX23 so far). EAP615-Wall, while being very similar to its older EAP235-Wall sibling, seems unaffected.

Since this issue renders the PoE-PD port inoperable, EAP235-Wall/EAP615-Wall testers need serial set up. If you haven't got a reliable serial connection on your EAP235/615, please do not test.

Archer C6U / AX23 users should be fine, since 6.1 seems to break the WAN port, meaning you can still recover since the LAN ports keep functioning. Other devices might be affected as well, they can be added.

You can report here or in GitHub by commenting on the open issues.

Thanks!

I will be able to test it on thursday with an EAP615 and an Archer AX23 (I saw the latter device being mentioned on Github from the link you posted). Today I sysupgraded an Archer C6v3 (also MT7621) from a v22 snapshot to an image I build yesterday from snapshot without any issue. The Kernel version changed from 5.10 to 6.1.

Linux version 5.10.162 (XXXX) (mipsel-openwrt-linux-musl-gcc (OpenWrt GCC 12.2.0 r21757-895f38ca1e) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.39) #0 SMP Tue Jan 10 23:05:18 2023
Linux version 6.1.82 (XXXX) (mipsel-openwrt-linux-musl-gcc (OpenWrt GCC 13.2.0 r25665-79e9ce354e) 13.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.40.0) #0 SMP Mon Mar 25 22:00:37 2024

The sysupgrade was performed remotely, the device is reachable via wireguard only, if the WAN port failed, I wouldn't be able to reach the device anymore.

I finished building an image for the EAP615 earlier today and am currently building one for the AX23. I'll report on the devices behaviour on thursday.

Thanks, much appreciated!

fyi: I updated an EAP615 from a 2-month old 5.15 snapshot to a 6.1 snapshot on March22 (using keep settings)
The device was not accessible after that, but after pressing reset for 5-10 seconds while device was on, it booted again with default settings

The kernel 6.1 based Snapshots (e.g. r25665) render lan0 inoperable on my TP-Link EAP235-Wall v1. Other ramips/mt7621 devices, including TP-Link EAP615-Wall v1 and Xiaomi Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition, have made the leap without issue.

I am still able to access the device via 'lan1' - 'lan3' if I reset from my "Dumb AP" config back to stock "Router" config.

Here are my Snapshot and previous 23.05.3 logs:

That's the error the EAP235 throws indeed. Are you able to compile yourself? If so, lower the speed in the DTS from 20000000 to 14000000 as suggested here.

Afraid my efforts to compile myself have not yet been successful.

You can grab a build off main here. There's personal commits on top but nothing that is relevant for mt7621, except for the flash speed being lowered. I am stil seeing the issue though, even with the lowered flash speed. But it would be neat to see it confirmed.

So far, for me the only thing that's working is reverting the mux patch as described in the GitHub issue.

So I can report back that the sysupgrade from image build today did indeed break the AX23. WAN not working, Only the first 3 LEDs are on, I can connect to the wifi and my TV is connected to it and has internet, but the device doesn't do DHCP and it doesn't receive an IP address from my Fritzbox. The internet LED is also not working and neither do the LAN LEDs.

I won't try with an EAP615, since I don't have options for serial access at the moment and need the device next week. Others seem to have tested for me already though.

Thanks for testing. Can you share the output of dmesg |grep mtk_soc_eth on your AX23? It's weird the WAN is not working while clients connected to it still have internet. Full logread output is okay as well.

I can't ssh into it atm, I need to figure out how to get access to it somehow. I'll report back tomorrow, when I hopefully have the chance to succeed.

Alright, I couldn't let this rest and managed to connect:

Are you able to compile? If so, lower the flash frequenty in your DTS from 20000000 to 14000000. Although at this point I'm pretty confident the only 'efficient' stopgap is reverting this commit for the affected devices:

So far we're at the EAP235-Wall, Archer C6U and AX23. Coincidentally all TP-Link devices...

I'll wait for a patch/revert. I have images for AX23 and EAP615 from January snapshots and the Archer C6v3 sysupgrade didn't result in the same issue. I'll test sysupgrading the "broken" AX23 with the older image tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

I can whip you up some patches if you'd like, for both. But given the (understandable) reluctance of the patch author to revert it - it's a wide ranging patch touching a lot of mt7621 devices - we should not be expecting a revert to land in the tree without people actually having tested it. So without testers, it becomes a chicken/egg problem.

I see, that is a fair assessment. Then I will be happy to test everything needed. I might do the same for the EAP615 next week if I figure out the serial connection stuff. Please tell me how I shall proceed regarding changes/patching.

P.S.: Here are some observations I made today:
Sysupgrading back to 5.15.147 (image build in January from r24453-a39a49e323 snapshot) worked. However, there were some strange things.

I have a twofold process for my devices: I build an image that includes customizations (packages and overwritten files like dnsmasq.conf). After flashing the firmware, I copy additional files and start an implementation process (using uci).

After the sysupgrade today, some settings like hostname, root password and LAN-interface-config were reset to before implementation process (e.g.: hostname Openwrt, root password different, 192.168.1.1 as LAN gateway).

In contrast, the wifi config was not reset to before uci implementation process, but to after it, deleting changes I made before sysupgrading to the "faulty" image and that were persistent over that upgrade.

I was, however, able to simply re-do the implementation process and now everything is back to standard. Still, a strange behaviour, as it is something I haven't observed before over countless sysupgrades. Although I might add that I never reverted backwards like in this case.

Appreciate it. The frequency patch (you can use git apply):

Like I said, I do not expect this to fix things, but it needs to be tested. This returns the port layout to the old way, before the mux patch was introduced:

If you're compiling, why not integrate your files and UCI scripts through env/files/ already? That way you can have those run after first boot (if only on clean flash and not a sysupgrade with settings kept, introduce a check in your UCI scripts on a setting you know only exists if your customisations have been applied).

Also, don't overwrite config files, edit them through UCI, that's consistent, overwriting configuration files completely can introduce random issues. Everything in /etc/config is just a human-readable translation of UCI settings.

Thanks, I will try the patches out this weekend and report back.

Almost all files are applied as part of a package from a seperate git repository. I also use env/files/ for replacements for /etc/iproute2/rt_tables for example. This is consistent with what you describe and, I suppose, the recommended way for local build processes.

The additional files, that are copied after flashing the router, are unique to each device, so I can't include them in the general building process. After those being copied, I initiate a secondary process that uses uci, as recommended, to apply changes to wireless, network, firewall etc. Editing in place is only done when testing stuff.

The second part could be included as you said, if it weren't for the uniqueness requirement. In fact, some things can be pushed into /env/files instead, but it doesn't make much of a difference to the workflow attached to it for me I think. Yet it gives me food for thought to see whether I can simplify some stuff. Good suggestion!

I wonder if the real problem here is a missing phy-mode in

&gmac1 {
	status = "okay";
	label = "lan0";
	phy-handle = <&ethphy0>;

	nvmem-cells = <&macaddr_info_8 0>;
	nvmem-cell-names = "mac-address";
};

Maybe something like

phy-mode = "internal";`

?

Older kernels were more forgiving.
