Regular kernel faults, maybe due to dnsmasq

Hi
I run v19.07.6 with dnsmasq 2.80-16.3 (due to CVE) but have faced this issue since v19.07.1. Regularly, when I connect any of two recent laptops by wifi or ethernet, I loose connection to my Xiaomi R3G v1 and have to reboot it.

I now use an external syslog server, and as you can see, there is a first kernel fault at 8:14:57. The router continues to work but in a degraded way (part of logs are incorrectly timestamped), then a second and definitive kernel fault happens at 8:16:58, after which nothing gets logged beyond 8:17:09.

Any idea of what it could be, and how to investigate it?

highly unlikely anything to do with dnsmasq... your log indicates it has something to do with stalls and cpu numbers...

  • perhaps you should explain in more detail anything you are running that is non-default ( radius?, sw/hw offloading?, irqbalance?, packet-steering?, etc. etc. )
  • when was the last known good version... and did you run the same combination of software then?

Indeed, I wrote "maybe due to dnsmasq" as the issue systematically arises when I plug one of the laptop in the network. But you're right that's only a light guess.

The extras that run on the router are:

  • hardware offloading (MT7621)
  • adblock (with 80k rules)
  • wireguard (daemon launched but no active connection for days)
  • there are 3 wifi networks on 2.4GHz (one guest which only access the WAN, one restricted only reachable from the LAN), 1 on 5.8GHz, all in WPA3 with hostapd-openssl
  • a few misc packets: usb/vfat mounting but not used ; ddns-scripts ; email with fdm and mstmp but not used from what I see when the crash arose.

The 4 CPUs on the router are most of the time below 25%. Free memory exceeds 180MB.

somethings for you to investigate...

  • disable hardware offloading
  • check the bug tracker ( flyspray ) for your soc
  • try master / snapshot

I will try, for sure. In the meantime, I've received some new weird syslog messages. Again, it happens just after a Dnsmasq action:

See the GitHub issue:

As for the kernel oops, that's probably not related to dnsmasq either.

For this latter issue, I followed that post MT76 driver issues V19.07 - Feedback - #9 by db260179 and set temporarily wifi country code to undefined/world (frequencies, power level and DFS are compatible with my countries' regulations). I'll see what it gives on a period.

Well, as your first error comes from netfilter flow tables, I would definitely disable hardware offloading...

Like already said , the remaining errors seem to be WiFi restarts, or net scheduler errors.

So far nothing about dnsmasq visible in logs...

A couple of days later, after having hardware offloading disabled, no more reboot. I'll update the thread if I have anything new.
It seems that I didn't use the right keywords when searching the forum, as there are several threads actually about issues on hardware offloading on this CPU.

Still no reboot since I disabled hardware offloading. I wish of course one manages to fix it
