Qualcomm promises upstream first

Qualcomm Linux 2.0 is presented as a major reset for Dragonwing IoT, replacing fragmented BSPs with an upstream-first, unified, multi-SoC stack. It uses mainline-tracking BSPs, a single system image, overlays, and optional proprietary packages, aiming for easier maintenance, predictable builds, and smoother migration, while still keeping some closed components.

Wake me up when that's actually reality, I'm not interested in empty promises and lip service (hint, Dragonwing != router SOCs).

The keyword here is probably “upstream-aligned”. Qualcomm Linux 2.0 will pair upstream components with optional Qualcomm proprietary software packages as shown in the software architecture above. The project will support both mainline kernel and LTS Linux kernel (currently Linux 6.18).

It looks more an announcement for Android phone, SBC and notebook computers that in some way don't mind proprietary components (maybe GPU drivers) sitting alongside other open source binaries and such....

Well openwrt supports SBCs as well so there could be profit here even if the router SOC wouldn't get the same treatment

"Upstream alignment" is not the definition of "upstream" in the most common sense, unfortunately. "Upstream" usually means opening the code and contribute to Linux Kernel directly.

Now if Qualcomm pulls an "NVIDIA open Linux driver" move, and moving most functions to close-source binary firmware, and keep the kernel modules as opensource as possible, that's an improvement maybe. However, I'm not sure it can work within the current OpenWrt architecture (or it merely makes building NSS image easier).
