The real problem might be that, when a valid mac address cannot be obtained via device tree, the "emac" driver for the ethernet of APM821XX will simply "platform 4ef600c00.ethernet: deferred probe pending", instead of continue working with a randomly generated mac address, as many other ethernet drivers do, which could ease the recovery process.
