Packet Loss / gaming jitter

I am using openwrt as a repeater, Linksys EA6350 v3 https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/ea6350_v3

my main router is using DD-WRT and has no packet loss if connecting to wifi

my issues is mostly with playing ps4, my packet loss is at 1% or below, there is a lot of jitter lag

I’m running on an Ethernet cable.

I installed sqm-scripts with cake but they don't help and make things worse.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  • How is the OpenWrt connected in regards to the PS4 and Internet?
  • Is there something you see in the log, or just a general post?

openwrt is connected to the ps4 with Ethernet cable and I'm doing testes with Cloudflare and showing 1% packet loss https://speed.cloudflare.com/

I only see this error in the system logs, not sure what it means

If so, explain how the OpenWrt is involved.

openwrt is connected to my main router (DD_WRT) via 2.4ghz, and openwrt is connected to my playstation, laptop with ethernet wire

under Network, Firewall, Drop invalid packets check box, seems to help a little

There are two immediate big red flags

  • 2.4 GHz (performance and lag going down the drain, interference alone makes sure of that, please, use 5 GHz)
  • (presumably, based on your very rough description), relayd (instead of WDS/ 4addr (requires OpenWrt on both routers) or routed-client mode, which would be considerably more reliable).

changing the mode to client (WDS) in openwrt and AP(WDS) in DD-wrt seems to work a little better

I am assuming AP stands for Access Point, but changing the mode to Access Point in openwrt will not work

This is terrible, 1% random packet loss is really unfortunate (maybe take a screenshot of such a test and post it here), please try:

select the VoIP test and a server close to where you live, then move the duration slider all the way to the right. Run the test (keep the browser window in the foreground and don't do anything else with your network, after it is done take a screenshot and post it here....)

0.7% packetloss in Download direction, not good. Is this measured with ethernet to the DD-WRT router or to the repeater? If the latter, how is the repeater connected to the primary router?

I would if possible always try to run ethernet cables between APs or at least a dedicated WiFi radio just for the backhaul link.

I am trying to increases my internet speeds that's why I installed a repeater, running a cable between dd-wrt and openwrt is not passible and I don't think it will make a differences since the issue is with openwrt

A repeater will always incur the repeater effect (tri-radio devices can alleviate that), halving your throughput. relayd is inherently unreliable, 4addr would improve (I'm not necessarily saying 'fix', but improve reliability). Wireless will by-design always have some amount of packet loss, varying throughput figures and other side effects, wired-ethernet is always a significant improvement.
