Now that the WAX218, I picked up a WAX620 to figure out.

Well, this device seems to work out of the gate with the WAX218 builds. The root file system lives on mtd19, if you're using the ubiformat method.

LED layout does need some work, as the WAX620 has more less, and they're in a different order than the WAX218. Will get that together as a PR here shortly.

Anything I should be aware of in terms of installing openwrt?
Sysupgrade would be lovely, but I know how to use tftp too using the app Transfer. I didn’t see any PR btw, is there any?

you're trying to extract the stock image, why exactly ?

Just wanna learn the tools and understand. And maybe we can get support for wax620. So having a look at files, I could compare it to the wax218.

Problem is, it's a vendor SDK, it won't have a lot in common with OpenWRT, and whatever you can find out there, you should've able to discover by booting an initramfs.

Just to be clear, the WAX218 firmware runs and is stable. the LEDs don't all work, and the WAX620 manages active boot partitions differently, so sometimes it will boot on the other firmware partition that, in my case, still has the factory firmware on it.

I've been mucking about trying to build an image for this device, but I'm running into issues with board-2.bin not being included in the build. Other than that, the image builds and installs without any drama.

If anyone can point me to information about sorting out the board-2.bin inclusion issue, I can likely get a PR together for this hardware in short order.

Well, this is fun. I tried to install in the UI with web-ui-factory.fit, but it says "Select a valid firmware file format.". I'm not able to login with ssh either.
I've downgraded to the lowest version (WAX620_V9.5.0.21) to see if that would make any difference, but it didn't.

How did you install openwrt with the UI @jmspswny ? Step-by-step...

to get the WAX218 firmware up and running on the WAX620, I used the following steps:

  • connect a serial cable to the right serial pin out (oriented as shown in photo above) at 115200 8N1 - pin guide is printed on the underside of the PCB
  • enter the u-boot shell
  • run setenv active_fw 1
  • load openwrt-ipq807x-generic-netgear_wax218-initramfs-uImage.itb via TFTP and boot it
  • flash netgear_wax218-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin from within the initramfs instance of OpenWRT

Running the WAX218 works with the following caveats:

  • the LEDS are not fully / properly utilized
  • the device will occasionally reboot to the other partition that still contains the factory firmware. If this happens, you can just use the Boot up Backup Firmware button in the factory firmware (found on the Management -> Maintenance -> Upgrade -> Firmware Upgrade page) to boot back to the OpenWRT firmware.

I'm still fighting with the build process not including ath11k/IPQ8074/hw2.0/board-2.bin. If anyone can tell me what step I might be missing with that, I'd be much obliged.
